  I married an afluent Thai woman 10 years ago. She was 22 and working as a first year Thai government teacher. Her family never requested or hinted at a dowry. In my opinion, if the Thai girl's family require a dowry, find a different girl.

  I've been with my Thai wife for 15 years. The question of a dowry never arose because, sadly, for her, when we met both her parents had already passed on. But I would have felt obliged to pay a dowry if this was not the case because I respect the Thai culture. Plus, most of it ends up being spent on the wedding reception.

  Love that second thing out of their mouth was buy me a coffee then if you are going to marry a thai girl you will need to give the family money. Three things better to rent than own. A plane, a boat and a girl

  Well I think dowry is a relict from the past and maybe still valid in rual areas like in Isaan. But in Bangkok it`s more like about having the right person who is a good person and knowing that they will take care of each other, thats more important than any payment.

  Nice interview Ying. I have been told by Thai people living in California and in Pattaya that Westerners performing the Wai is considered silly by many. I guess it depends upon where one is in the provinces or the larger cities. I do agree that mutual respect is important. No one wants to lose face, either the Westerner or the local people. I don't agree with the Dowry practice. Many Western guys have been scammed by this "traditional" social practice. It's important to have boundaries especially with finances until a high level of trust exists between the couple.
