The REAL Reason Sauron Let Shelob Live In Cirith Ungol

Why does the most controlling tyrant in Middle-earth — a being obsessed with dominion, watching his borders with a lidless eye — tolerate a monster he doesn't command, living in his own wall, eating his own soldiers? Almost every other horror in Mordor is on the payroll. The orcs are counted. The Nazgûl are leashed. And then there's the thing in the pass of Cirith Ungol. Older than the tower. Older than the realm. Serving no one. The answer to why Sauron lets Shelob live tells you something chilling about how evil actually organizes itself in Tolkien's world. In this video we walk through the deep lore of Her Ladyship — the last child of Ungoliant, the ancient darkness-spider who drank the light of the Two Trees of Valinor dry and once wrapped Morgoth himself in her webs. The Silmarillion tells us she came south into a mountain pass before Sauron built a single stone of Barad-dûr — Mordor went up around her, not the other way. We look at the fortress the Gondorians built at Cirith Ungol to watch that pass, the orc-captains Shagrat and Gorbag who talk about her the way men talk about a minefield with seniority, and the quietly horrifying line Tolkien gives us about Sauron's real attitude: "his cat he calls her, but she owns him not." Plus the moment the deep lore pays off — Sam and the light of Eärendil's star, which is the light of a Silmaril, which is preserved light of the Two Trees her mother helped destroy. The hallowed light of the Trees against the last child of the thing that killed them. And the ending Tolkien refuses to write, closing the door on her fate with four words: this tale does not tell.
