The Valar broke the gates of Utumno but never searched the deepest vaults, and Sauron walked out of one of them later. Carelessness, or the only ending the story could have had?

If the Hype button is showing for you, it helps this one get found.

The images in this video made me contemplate. While many dream of land on a hill flowing with rivers, trees, fruits e.t.c, utumno a deep flowing with rivers of lava, toxic gasses, steel and sharp objects, torture chambers, armeries, magic, sounds of hammers, cries of prisoners. More complicated laborinths than dwarf mines.

Movies of the Silmarillion should be R-rated to scare even an adult audience, for the stories are more adult than the likes of LOTR and the kiddy Hobbit with its comical Dwarves

Circa 4:11 Famous first lines...
In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. (The Hobbit. 1937).
In a hole in the ground there lived a right nasty bastard. (The Silmarillion. 1977).

Evil was more powerful, devastating, violent and numerous in those Ages. Pure horror!
I always think of Utumno as looking like H.R.Giger art packed with Xenomorphs.
The Age of Sauron was far lesser with the Orcs coming across as more lower working class humans and sometimes comical.

Perhaps Sauron actually believed that Melkor(Morgoth) could/would somehow return from the void and he would be rewarded for following his master's plan. Just a thought

Im not deeply educated in the lore but I always found it hard to believe that the orcs were produced by corrupted elves. if I'm not mistaken, the establishment of Utumno was before the elves awoke? he had legions of orcs by then, didn't he? and the orc armies always massively outnumbered the elves in every big battle from the beginning of the War of Jewels so its hard to say that the original orcs were just a mass of abducted elves.

My friend, you confused a bit, you completely forgot about Angband, after that comes your story, not after Utumno😉
