  As a kid, when I first read LOTR, even before the Silmarillion came out and made it a lot clearer what Sauron was, I remember being very creeped out by Gollum’s line about the missing finger. &nbsp;That a spiritual being that essentially wove his own physical form out of sheer will could have that kind of permanent scar, for whatever reason weirded me out as an 11 year old. And it also made it very clear why he specifically hated Elendil’s line. &nbsp;When you are mortal you get to a certain age and, unless you are a complete narcissist, you just say, whoops, another scar. I’m going to loose my whole body soon, and anyway, it just makes me seem more badass. But if you are an immortal angelic being, to have that sort of scar on you very spirt, and for all eternity, well that is extremely creepy, and I assume would make said angelic being extremely cranky and dangerous.

  He&apos;s sullen and paranoid. &nbsp;He deceives himself that he&apos;s been appointed by default as the &quot;warden&quot; of Middle Earth, which he sees as a prison of even more unworthy beings. &nbsp;In other words, that he still basically retains his status as some type of authority figure, rather than just a fugitive too degenerate for real authority to pursue directly. &nbsp;As far as he&apos;s concerned, he&apos;s the most glorious person in the world, and there&apos;s nothing outside of his tower citadel worth meeting or that can be trusted. &nbsp;Plus he&apos;s been humiliated many times when he did things personally, and he is one to learn (albeit incompletely) from mistakes.

  Even though the films make the body/Eye thing confusing for film-only fans, I do have to say: That moment Frodo puts on the Ring in the cracks of Doom, and the Eye is like 👁️ “oh…SHIIIIT!” is fantastic, but also somehow still absolutely lore-accurate. “All his will was bent at that moment on the Ring, his enemies plans laid bare, and he knew how precarious his fate lay” or something to that affect. 😊

  Id say 2 reasons: <br>1) Pride/ego and his abiliry ro project power through servants.<br>2) He was probably extremely busy. He ruled a vast empire. Not just Mordor, but tributary states and allies in the east and south. Rhere was an entire complex economic system in the east. He was constantly in contact with leadership, conducting trade deals. Had a an entire spy net work had to make reports with, organize and approve logistics, as well as all the projects was working crafting, building things. Ect. He was actually probably very busy. Im betting he was using the palantir quite often too. <br><br>Remember, he did have a physical form but he was not an indestructible god. Expecially without the ring. He could be injured and killed. And it would take a very long to get a new body.

  Hence one of the reasons he made the ring. To concentrate his power instead of spread it to thin like Melkor did. If he got the ring back he would have been able to fully rebuild I reckon. Well to his full form at the end of the second age. Numenor was a victory for Sauron overall.

  I think Tolkien used the word &apos;garments&apos; when describing what the physical body was for spiritual beings like Sauron and Gandalf.

  I just assumed that after losing the ring in which he invested so much of his own power he was left pretty weakened. Because of that while he was still formidable he also was a tactician. Why go out and fight battles in a weakened state when you were fell in your peak? Instead consolidate power in a safe location, grow an army and have them fight for you. So he did just that while sending others to deal with the true goal of all of this… find and return his ring so he can regain that power once lost. The battles weren’t the focus, the ring was.<br><br>That’s why in the film adaptation even after filming it Jackson chose not to use the battle with Sauron returning and fighting. That would have made the battle the focus point when it was Frodo and the ring which was the true focus point.
