DR. NO was chosen as the first official movie, because it was a simple plot and it was set in Jamaica. Fleming owned a house there, called GOLDENEYE which had been the Code Name for a World War 2 operation by the British Naval Intelligence. The title was later used for the 1995 movie starring PIERCE BROSNAN as James Bond.
STING wrote "Every Breath You Take" while Sting was staying at Goldeneye in the 1980s.

This is basically the only 50s Bond film. In 1962 the sixties as we know them hadn't really started yet.

Dr No has metal hands. In the novel he had his hands cut off by the triads because he stole money from them. In the movie it’s hinted at that he lost his hands while testing and experimenting with atomic power

I'm very excited to watch you two go on this journey! The Bond franchise is a landmark in action-adventure cinema, and it's fascinating to see how the franchise evolved overtime. One little tidbit to keep in mind that will make watching a little easier: The character of Felix Leiter (the CIA agent) reappears throughout the franchise, but is almost always played by a different actor each time, so don't be confused when Bond runs into seemingly random people and starts calling them Felix. It's just a bizarre quirk of this franchise.

Brace for wild tonal shifts between some of the films, but I think there's something to appreciate in all of them.

It's refreshing to come across a YouTube channel that's reacting to the James Bond movies from the beginning and in order.

Ian Fleming based many of the characters in the James Bond novels on British SOE agents he had met that were dropped into occupied Europe during WWII. The leading women in the novels, in particular, were based on female agents who were self reliant, technology using agents linked to the Maquis in France who sent intelligence back to the UK to inform on troop movements, weapons installation etc between 1941-44. This included identifying V1 and V2 rocket emplacements and construction of the coast defences in France and army movements leading to Dieppe raid and later D Day.
The womanising was totally unreal, as Fleming said. It was just to make the books popular. Many of the Bond villains were named after Fleming's enemies at school (such as Blofeld)!

Dr No was played by Joseph Wiseman who was born in Montreal. He had a long and distinguished career on Broadway and in the movies and died in 2009 at the age of 91. By the way, Tarantula bites (if you can get them to bite) are usually no more dangerous than a bee or wasp sting. However, being large and cinematic, they make better movie villains than the smaller and more deadly species. A popular song from a few years prior to this film was The Banana Boat Song, sung by Harry Belafonte and which had a line about the "deadly black tarantula."

Bond was able to smash through the electrified grading of the window in his cell with his shoe because the sole of the shoe was rubber which acted as insolation.
