  No Latvia (or Bulgaria)! Don't worry Kristin, the great Rick Steves has never done a video on Riga or Latvia. As a Latvian, I have no problem keeping my country a secret.

  Some of the information is outdated. Also: if you want to live long-term in a foreign country, commit to learning the language to your best abilities. There is a reason why many countries require fluency in their language when considering residency. And frankly, it is a ridiculous idea to expect living well in a foreign country without knowing the language.

  Interesting summary. <br><br>I chuckled a little when you mentioned Italy&apos;s bureaucracy. I applied for German citizenship by descent 32 months ago, and I&apos;m still waiting to hear from BVA. When I emailed them a few months ago to check on the status of my application, their response was:<br><br>1. We have your application. <br>2. We received a ton of applications. <br>3. They&apos;re processed in the order received. <br>4. Don&apos;t call us, we&apos;ll call you if we have any concerns. <br><br>Welcome to German bureaucracy. 😂 (To be fair, they did tell me the process could take 2-3 years.)

  Geography and weather were strong reasons why most of Finnish Americans chose to settle certain US States and Canada in 1870-1930. Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin and Ontario (Canada) have quite similar weather to central Finland. In Nordic countries people are totally prepared for cold winter months with warm houses and apartments and right kind of winter clothes. Besides the snow doesn&apos;t cause any major problems for traffic. There is relatively warm season from May to September, and the length of days are longer than in southern European countries especially in June and July. For instance in central Finland the length of day is currrently over 20 hours, and a dark night lasts less than 4 hours.<br><br>Besides all the Nordic countries are stable liberal democracies where children can go to school on their own, and the police use guns very rarely. There used to be Lutheran state churches, but the Nordic countries are very secular societies and religion is seen as a private matter. There might be relatively high taxes, but in most cases tax money is used for good causes like public healthcare and free education for everyone. Cities are also planned for public transport, pedestrians and cyclists, not just for private cars.

  Tip for Americans, if you are coming to any European country to live - please don&apos;t moan and complain - &apos;we don&apos;t do this in the US&apos; etc etc. Europe is a diverse continent. You left the US for a reason.

  Croatia&apos;s cost of living has been exploding since it got the euro in 2023. Also the bureaucracy is worse than in Italy.

  One thing I&apos;ve learned is that people often ask &quot;What&apos;s the best country?&quot; when the better question is &quot;What kind of life do I want to build?&quot; The same country can feel amazing or disappointing depending on the city, your budget, your visa situation and your priorities.
