  I grew up playing piano. I have never started my tracks with drums. Always melody.

  I always said starting with beats will inspire to generic stuff. Playing with a sound (bass, leadsynth, piano, pads) getting a musical idea first develop the idea and it wil ask for certain beats....

  I come from indie rock, pop and folk and traditionally a song starts with a riff. Or a main theme, or you come up with a chorus. And around there 1. Everybody jams and the song forms by itself or 2. Somebody, usually the creator of the riff or the main theme, tells musicians how it is required to play. So yes, I’m a drummer and its very very rare a song starts with a rythm and finishes by itself because rythm is at the service of music and not the other way around.

  Wow, I always start with a chord sequence, then figure out the beat I want for it.
