  My daughter bought a dog during the cov19 lockdowns... fast forward a few months and the poor pup was abandoned. Had to step in and adopt him, best decision ever. Ever since, he helps me be in shape, walking 10k twice a day and keeps me company 24/7

People say “you could die tomorrow!” Yes, but you could also live tomorrow, which is far more likely and far more costly. <br><br>Financial planning is about planning for if you live.

  Many years ago when my dad died (we were not close!) I was 76k in debt. I got $78k when he died. I paid every cent of that debt and went to a good bit of counseling to address my spending so that it would not happen again. And guess what, it hasn’t. Zero debt. Paid cash for my car (32k), and retired at 55. I learned a very hard lesson, I got very lucky to pay it off, and don’t need to repeat it.

  My brother spent 90k on a wedding in 2002. He&apos;s still in debt from it. Has another 30k left on it.<br>FYI, they are still happily married, despite all the debt.

  One of my relatives had a grown daughter. When he died, he left her a big house (fully paid for) and around $160,000 in cash and investments. I tried advising her about handling her windfall (I have an MBA), but instead she quit her job, got a new car, an ATV, took expensive vacations, etc. Within 18 months all the money was gone, and 7 years later she lost the house due to unpaid property taxes. Now she&apos;s on welfare in subsidized housing.

  The moment the guy said that a dog &quot;sucks up your time&quot; I knew he should not have a dog. Perhaps he should have goldfish. Or better yet, one of those pet rocks from the 1970s.

  I have 2 large dogs and a cat (all rescued) and, yes, it is expensive. However, they are in my budget and I’m not lacking anything. I see people in my community all the time trying to rehome their pets because they can’t afford them or are moving and the new place doesn’t allow pets. If you can’t commit to being responsible for them for 14 years, or more, don’t buy or adopt a pet.

  I had a friend who was a heavy gambler tell me the story of when he won a couple million. He lived the high life at the casino for 6 months and walked away with nothing. Apparently they treated him like a king, he had the best room and pretty much his own server bringing him food and drinks 24/7.<br>He told me he didn&apos;t regret it and would do it over if he won that money again. Thing is he wasn&apos;t a dumb guy, i took it as a lesson in addiction.

  Here in Finland, we don&apos;t have the option of bankruptcy. If you can&apos;t pay your bills, they&apos;ll take you to court and they&apos;ll be taking money out of your paycheck until everything is paid. If after 15 years it&apos;s still not paid, THEN the rest of the loans are forgiven. It&apos;s a painful and long road, but at least you won&apos;t get into more debt, since with no credit nobody will give you any loans.
