I spent 5 months at Broughton in 2011. I had heard all the stories, but I was surprised by how much activities they had for us, and they were very well staffed. 7-10 staff per unit, each unit houses 18 patients. They even had x box and PlayStation, and Wii. They helped me a lot.

Growing up, it was a threat that you'd get thrown in here if you didn't act right. My grandma flat out refused a massive pay raise to work here, too.

I used to live in Morganton. I never even liked driving by that place.

I was an intern here in 1993. I don't remember any hauntings, but the feeling inside the buildings were very oppressive; it felt hard to breathe almost.

Never thought this would have been suggested for me. But seems everyone agrees: driving by this place would give anyone the creeps. My wife’s sister worked there for about five years.

My grandmother was in the nursing class of 1919. My grandmother was just back from WWI and was working as a fireman for the hospital when they met. They lived literally the first house south of the hospital on Sterling St. As a child of the 50s it was always fun to ride the grounds at Christmas as they had the most decorations around.

I worked at Broughtons for almost 10 years in the 1980's before I transferred my time to Western Carolina Center (now called the J Iverson Riddle Developmental Center where I retired) I'm not lying when I say I've seen some scary 💩 along with abuses of all kinds including electro shock. They actually teach you and you have to pass a PIT program. (Personnel Intervention Technique, they teach you how to fight to control the uncontrollable and subdue the extremely violent)Those that died there that were considered unclaimed are buried on the grounds beside Enola Road. After I retired, I moved back home to the mountains around 35 miles away. I've never been back to Morganton, I never will!

Good intentions however sincere are never enough on their own. Dignity requires constant vigilance rather than a single founding vision. I like that.

I worked there as a CNA/Healthcare Tech from 1998-2008. I was able to explore the tunnels underground when I worked third shift, very creepy. I absolutely believe the place is haunted.

I drive by this place fairly often and it has a very, very ominous feeling to it. Creepy as hell.

Listening to the history while headed to the new building to pick up an inmate.
