Narcissists often compare you to their ex-partners, because such comparisons force you to constantly vie for their validation.

From my experiences, it's cause they're still stuck on them. They may say they aren't, but they most certainly are.

It’s also used in a negative context. “To be honest this is reminding me of my ex”

When he started comparing me with an ex, I told him if I was the rebound, I want you to be happy so I'm excusing myself. I from that day forward to began to detach. I stopped calling and texting first, began spending more time alone detoxing. He moved on. I let him 😂.

He never brought up an ex, but he made me felt like a secondary person to his friends and eventually the new supply. He had no issues using me when it was on his terms, but other people in his life always took a higher priority. And there is no amount of communication to convince him otherwise. It’s painful to think I was just objectified and not valued for everything I gave and the time I sacrificed for him. I wasn’t even valued enough in his eyes for truth and honesty about what else he was entertaining.

The comparison itself isn't always the real issue. Pay attention to when it happens, what they're trying to accomplish with it, and how they respond when you challenge the comparison. Context often tells you more than the words alone.

When he says, ‘You’re just like my ex,’ (which he did hundreds of times) he reveals more about himself than her and I. It reveals the recurring pattern in him, unfolding right there in real time, while he remains unwilling to confront it or change. 15 weeks no contact Lee!!

Answered it if somebody tries to compare you to their ex just snap back with “ well that’s why they’re your ex because that obviously didn’t work”

The easiest way to snip this, is to just start going on and on about one’s own exes, all their talents, etc. If the person with NPD says anything you could say “Oh I just thought we were talking about people we’ve been with in the past. It sounds like you’re interested in those experiences; I have plenty to share with you!” Of course, that’s if you’re bothering to be around someone with NPD; it’s completely optional of course. We can spend our time however we want.
