  I know some of Edgar Harrells family. When he died in 2021, they told me that the Japanese Commander Hashimoto, the man who sank the ship.. his granddaughter came to his funeral to pay respects. That was powerful.

  Some of the families of the deceased sending mail to Captian Mc Vay blaming him was a vicious thing to do. It's one thing to be dreadfully grief stricken but out of their choice of unforgiveness came destructive words against a man already very broken by the fateful event.

  Great honorable mention in bold print to the radioman who knew the ship was sinking and the compartments were flooding, and the flames were spreading, and the escape routes were closing, and he would not make it out.  All of this was not just bravery but self-offering.  He wasn’t fighting for glory. He wasn’t fighting for recognition. He wasn’t fighting for a medal. He was fighting for the boys on the sleeping deck, the officers trying to organize the evacuation, the wounded trapped below, the men who would be floating in the dark within minutes.  He died trying to give them a chance and the tragedy. The part that breaks your heart is that the signals he sent were received but ignored and he didn't even know it.  The man had a name not just a position.  That incredible man was Chief Radio Technician Leonard Thomas Woods and may God rest his soul because being lost at sea was one horrible and tragic thing but to remain lost in the sea of history would be a fate underserving of the unconquerable spirit of this man - a man whose sacrifice stands as a testament to what it is to be American at that time: willing to give everything, even life itself, in service to others. A sacrifice so noble that even former enemies would recognize its moral power and if the devil himself, were here, he would have to agree and may these posthumous words of honour that I have carved with these readers echo like a bagpipe of salute to this man throughout all of eternity.  Now he wears the full armour of honour and permanence as witness to his love and bravery.

  I first learned of the USS Indianapolis from Jaws when I was little. The "Indianapolis Speech" by the Chief who told the horrifying perspective of a survivor in the water.

  What about the clown who was too drunk to be informed of the SOS and the other fools who assumed it was not a real emergency? Were they court martialed?
