An Ancient Discovery in Zion Is Leaving Archaeologists Without Answers

Hidden high within the towering sandstone cliffs of Zion National Park are ancient structures that most visitors would never notice from the canyon floor. Archaeologists have documented stone granaries and storage structures built into protected cliff alcoves, including examples positioned remarkably high above the canyon floor. Archaeological investigations in Zion have also uncovered houses, storage cists, pottery, baskets, sandals, and projectile points associated with ancient communities of the region. The archaeological landscape of Zion preserves evidence connected with both Ancestral Puebloan and Fremont traditions, revealing that these dramatic canyons were part of a much larger human landscape. Zion also preserves ancient rock art, including pictograph panels documented in areas such as Cave Valley. In this video, we explore what archaeologists have actually discovered in Zion, how ancient communities used this extraordinarily vertical landscape, and why some structures were built in locations that remain astonishingly difficult to reach today. The mystery isn't a lost civilization or a supernatural discovery. It's the physical evidence left behind in places where few people today would ever think to look. References to Ancestral Puebloan, Virgin Branch, and Fremont traditions describe archaeological classifications and should not be interpreted as implying that every structure, artifact, or rock-art panel in Zion can be assigned to a specific group with certainty. The video does not claim to know the precise motivation behind the placement of every granary, the meaning of ancient pictographs, or the exact causes behind later population changes in the region.
