  In 2019 I was on a flight from NYC to Accra when I met a Ghanaian-American professor. We got to chatting and I told him how excited I was to move to Ghana. I planned on packing up and leaving NYC in 3 year. He told me “you love it now because you are visiting. Life in Ghana is very difficult”. I’m so happy that I didn’t move because I would not be able to function in that society.

  German here, living in the Eastern Region. I only go to Accra to run errands. Any time I go, I am completely exhausted afterwards. Never ever could I live there. <br>I appreciate my slow and quiet life here. What I miss is German bread, fresh milk, simple coffee shops and a library. <br>What has taken a toll on me is being deceived, because it happened so often.

  I am also a dual Ghanaian Canadian citizen and on early retirement since January 2025. My wife and I are now Snowbirds spending the 5 winter months in Ghana and the rest of the year in Western Canada. To spend this length of time meant we had to build a miniature Canada within the 4 walls of our house and “accepting the rest of Ghana to be Ghana”. Having our own means of transportation in Ghana was perhaps the wisest decision. &nbsp;A pickup is my vehicle of choice at the present time.<br><br>Yes it is frustrating to live in Ghana at times but we have toughen it out. Yes I was born in Ghana and spent first 25 years there and over 3 decades in Canada. It takes guts for sure to survive in Ghana for any period beyond 3 months so I split those 5 months into 2. The transition has not easy but we soldier on.<br><br>Kudos I am so proud of your gallant effort in moving to Ghana for a prolonged period of time. In Ghana, Accra is not my place of choice for all the reasons you have mentioned above. My preference is to move to a small village close enough to Kumasi where we have just completed a small dwelling place for ourselves. <br><br>My advice to anybody intending to move to Ghana is to first secure your own dwelling place there and have a reliable means of transportation at your disposal. Without these 2 you may not make it long term. Plan well and increase your threshold for dealing stuff in Ghana life to enjoy your stay in Ghana.

A lot of ppl who trash modern western countries have never been to an under developed country. They have no clue the level of privilege and mental health that comes with it. <br><br>I cried every other morning living in an under developed country. It broke me knowing my discomfort was temporary while for others, it’s their entire life experience.
