  I've always said, "When they took phonics out of schools our kids would be in trouble" and that's exactly what happened. Kids do not know how to sound words out because they don't know what sounds certain letters together sound like. We won't even get into comprehension.

  This has been going on since the 80s. We called it the dumbing down back then, it is now complete.

  I used to criticize my Indian system of “rote learning” where you have to forcefully learn and regurgitate things, often mechanically without any soul to them. But that type of education is miles ahead of the “vibes based” education that seems to be taking over western curriculums, especially given the purposeful defunding and dismantling of education infrastructure that’s being sold as a good thing, which results in schools being unable to afford due diligence. I hated my education curriculum growing up, but it did help me become an excellent reader and fast learner, with a formidable vocabulary in English which is my third language. Basic literacy is important, and one is essentially paralyzed and vulnerable without it.

  I go to look at the comments and YouTube automatically suggests the AI summary. I feel like that’s a big part of the issue.

  Luckily, 60 years ago, I matriculated at a parochial grammar school, where the nuns actually the "3 Rs" AND seven more subjects, including geography, grammar, mathematics, reading, religion, science and social studies. And there were no "freebies!" If you didn't pass, you'd repeat the grade — no ifs, ands or buts! Believe it or not, the educational foundation that I received at "Mother Catherine Spaulding" was so solid that it allowed me to be on cruise-control in route to earning three college degrees — without breaking a sweat. Nowadays, however, most students, even upon graduating high school, have not even mastered the "3 Rs!" 😢

  The teachers and other staff were too afraid to change to make their school better, but instead threatened to expell a student who was calling out the incompetence of her school staff she was supposed to "trust". Trust to teach her, and other students.
