It's deliberate.  If people can't read, they just have to believe what they're told.

My sister used to teach at an inner city high school. She taught English. She quit teaching because when she would fail kids the parents would call and complain, and the principal would change their grade. What's the point of school?

Those kids should be pissed off. Pissed off enough to not wait on anyone else to fix their problem of not knowing how to read.

Amala, I'm a retired math teacher. I had a class ask me why they needed to know what we were studying, so I made the decision to shelve the lesson for the day and answer them. In detail. I asked each of them what they wanted to do as a job. The answers ranged from home duties to carpenter to firefighter. I broke down the real world applications of each topic, as applied to the each job. Best 20 mins of the semester. They were interested and engaged. Result: no more complaints. They knew exactly the what and exactly the why. Grades improved. Imo every class needs a 20 mins like this.

If you write it in cursive they would have thought it was a foreign language.

The most absurd thing about the kid giving the card to read was that the school threatened him for exposing the school.

I have taught Elementary for 8 years. Students can decode a word to sound it out and read it, but they can't summarize a sentence or give the meaning of a word they sound out. They can't write comprehensible sentences as well. Many students do just give up. They also have the attention span that lasts for 1 or 2 minutes. Even the things that are done for them that are fun in learning they complain about. It's not fun enough for them. A big problem is all the technology is introduced at much to young of an age, kids are ignored by their parents, and their brains are not getting the growth needed before school even starts.

I'm a middle school teacher and, in case you didn't know, reading isn't the only thing they can't do.
