  My dog didn&apos;t pass the mirror test until I picked her up and held her in the mirror. The external context clicked in her head. She could see me, and feel me holding her. Now she no longer demands to play with the secret second dog I hide in the glass universe.

  Theres an african grey in youtube that saw a green bottle and asked &quot;What color?&quot; His owner said green. The parrot didn&apos;t know how to say green, so instead he said &quot;Color shrek!&quot;

  The clip with the elephant saying a word without probably knowing the meaning behind it made me think about how we humans tend to mimic noises animals make back at them without really knowing if they have any meaning to the animal

  My friend has red foxes as pets. When her vixen saw herself in a mirror she sniffed at the image and started giving a warning bark showing she did not recognize herself. Then she changed her angle and saw her owner in the mirror. She looked back and forth a few times and up and down. Once she realized that someone she recognized was being reflected she calmed down and started looking at her reflection more and stopped acting toward it like another fox.

  When I last went scuba diving, the crew told us about this big blue fish called Nigel that had been following their boat for years. <br>Sure enough, Nigel and two of their divers were there the end of our tour of the reef. <br>One of them had an underwater camera, and the would put a finger in Nigel&apos;s mouth and guide him into position as we took turns getting photos with him. <br>Again, this was not an aquarium, Nigel was actively choosing to show up and cooperate. I don&apos;t know the full scope of their dynamic, or how they got to this point, but the fact that these guys had a working relationship with a wild fish is something that stuck with me.

  <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GVkNB-WAMew&amp;t=1240">20:40</a> it’s recently been studied that dogs developed more eyebrow musculature to more effectively communicate with humans. We’ve literally coevolved together it’s amazing.

  Sometimes interspecies communication also just works because of a sort of glitch between the &quot;languages&quot;. Like how cats and goats often form friendships because to a cat a gentle headbutt is a sign of affection and to a goat it&apos;s a type of play.

  That made me of think of that moonfish in an aquarium that got depressed during the pandemic because no one came to see it anymore, and only got better when they put cardboard people in the aquarium. It raises the question if even &quot;less advanced&quot; animals such as fish can understand that they&apos;re liked, even loved
