If Paris is called the City of light (la ville lumière), it is not because we have more powerfull light in town. It’s because Paris was amongst the first cities in Europe to have artificial light in the streets. It also refers to the 18th century called century of lights, meaning philosophy, political philosophy, human rights (Montesquieu, Voltaire and so on were based in France and around the center of French politics in Paris or Versailles).

I live in Paris and I do not have a car. I don’t need one. I walk or use public transportation system. I also can use a bike. Most people do the same in Paris.

These drinking water fountains are named Wallace fountains after an English philanthropist, Sir Richard Wallace, who gifted them to France.

About the Champs Elysées roundabout. We love it ! It’s a test to find out if we’re good drivers. One piece of advice. Never look at what’s happening behind your car! Only look ahead!

Paris is called the City of Light (La Ville Lumière) for two primary historical reasons: its pioneering adoption of street lighting and its central role in the Age of Enlightenment.
