Wanted to point out that picture that you showed of Honey Gourami is in fact, a Thick-lipped Gourami, which looks like a honey but is generally more aggressive and isn't as good a community fish for beginners with smaller tanks. Honeys have more slender faces, are more sunshine yellow (or wild-type) and have more opaque tails.

i had 1 harlequin and 1 adult CPD that hung out together for a long time, eventually the CPD got sick and the harlequin would swim around him to make sure nothing was bothering him until he passed. they had a great friendship!

Honey gouramis have huge personalities; they will engage with you through the glass or at the surface, and spend the rest of their time teaching each other secret handshakes with their little feelers and resolving their conflicts with kissing contests. Highly recommended and so glad to see them recognized here. They get overlooked because they’re very plain looking while young and stressed in the shop.

My partner just started getting into the fish world and had a pretty good little community going, and then he fell in love with red eyed tetras and I tried to steer him towards rummy nose tetras instead, silvery body with a red face, same-ish style of what he wanted just in a smaller, more peaceful package. But he was adamant on it and who am I to tell him he’s wrong? He wanted them for HIS community tank of tiny nano fish and shrimpies and he thought they were cool looking… it didn’t last a week, the group of 7 ate everything that fit in their mouths and all the shrimp and babies he had. Now he does his research instead of impulsively buying a “cool looking fish” 😂

Tiger barbs seem to be the one species where most fish store employees almost always warn any purchasers that they are aggressive (some will apply this practice to all barbs), often far beyond what they do deserve. In contrast, they seem to assume that the customer knows what they are doing when selling much more aggressive fish.
