So they’re really saying the way to prevent the illiteracy crisis is to… invest some money and help people learn to read? I can see why that would be considered miraculous

It probably doesn’t help we spent an entire generation mocking English majors in the US

That means in a couple decades, being able to read is going to become a high demand skill

I'm Gen Z myself, and my Dad brought me up a reader. Atrioc is bang-on, books like Eragon, Percy Jackson, The Hobbit all sparked my love for reading, and fantasy in general.

I was barely allowed to watch tv growing up. It was always “read a book”. I’m eternally grateful after finding this information out 😂

Studies always show how our Literacy is bad but we never see anything about how many people can't spell. With the prevalence of auto correct it must be pretty high.

comprehension is in the ground though. it is incredible to see well articulated discussions online are just filled with comments of people who genuinely have no clue what the point of the commentary was. like its just beyond horrible. sometimes ill see people posting screenshots of their arguments over text and im absolutely floored by how none of the parties involved in these conversations seem to be able to actually read and comprehend what is being discussed, its like two or more people having entirely independent conversations. and people LOVE to read a very clear statement and completely misunderstand what it says, then theyll get mad and claim "this thing said this" when they just factually did not. and omg dont even try to get people to understand subtext or theyre going to hit you with "its not that serious..." just because they genuinely cant grasp what a dogwhistle is and they are unable to not take anything at face value. people are absurdly stupid, but theyre not considered illiterate because they can read a tiktok caption, when truthfully they absolutely are unable to read.

I don’t know if Atrioc is really on the nose with the complaint about books not being interesting enough because I remember we read Percy Jackson as one of the first assigned books in middle school and our high school summer reading book before 9th grade started was a pretty average coming of age book about a high school freshman and I don’t remember my classmates particularly caring about either of those. I know another popular one I’ve seen teachers assign was the hunger games, which to my understanding (as a huge hunger games fan) is just better Red Rising. The only classic I read in middle school that I can remember was The Giver, which isn’t a super dry one as far as classics go. It’s about a magic dystopia. We didn’t get to drier classics like To Kill a Mockingbird, The Great Gatsby, or The Awakening until like 10th grade.

Idk I was a HUGE reader as a kid, always had my nose in a book since I could read, and I feel like my peers’ general lack of care for reading started in like 1st grade when they’d look at me weird for reading voluntarily. I think the distaste for it starts early with kids whose families don’t mirror the behavior by reading often and having books around the house. I can’t remember any classmates before high school ever caring about the assigned book, even before we were reading classics.
