  Back in the 70s when I first started teaching inner city elementary, I realized that my skills did not lie with teaching reading. However, there was a fellow teacher who was a reading specialist but wasn't good in math and science. Solution? She taught my class reading, I taught her class math and science. The students got the best of both worlds. But what happened? The district didn't like the idea that we weren't teaching ALL the subjects to our students so after two years, they banned it. Once again, administration strikes and the students suffer.

  Gave my cousins kid a pokemon game to borrow, he’s at least 11. he loves the cards but was so lost with the reading in the games. Constantly confused and just ended up getting frustrated. I’ve been playing these games since I was 5 and don’t ever remember struggling to understand them. I know it’s a weird gauge of literacy but i feel like if you can’t even read for fun in that sense then we are done for as a society.

  As a kid, my mom was always supportive of video games that &quot;forced you to read&quot; as she&apos;d said. It was all Harvest Moon, Animal Crossing, Pokemon, and other similar games. When I was pretty young, she would sit with me and help me play so I could understand the tutorial so I wouldnt get frusted. She also read a lot of books to me. <br>Now reading is my #1 hobby (its kind of an issue). Thanks mom ❤

  Reading novels is the best way to be able to get good enough at reading that the words disappear, and what you&apos;re left with is images, ideas, feelings, and etc that everyone should be able to experience

  I&apos;m in uni and i&apos;m honestly horrified by the fact that we&apos;re literally taught to rely on copilot and chatgpt instead of writing our own presentations or even doing a google search. Our professor at times seems to indicate that it&apos;s of no particular importance that we put effort into searching for info when doing our assessments. <br><br>I wonder whether he understands that just because <b>he</b> has spent decades expanding his knowledge by reading and researching it doesn&apos;t mean we have. He can probably use gen-ai critically but his students at this rate will never develop the sort of deeper understanding needed for that. There&apos;s just no shortcut to expertise.

  I work at a pregnancy help center and they initiated a book program earlier this year where they provide quality board books for moms (and dads!) to read to their babies in utero and beyond. It astonished me to realize how few people know that there is a connection between reading aloud to infants/babies/children and brain development, language acquisition, imagination stimulation, etc. I learned a ton about this subject by helping implement this program.

  It seems like a LOT of millennial parents (my own generation) are specifically not prioritizing reading WITH their children. I have about fifteen friends with kids, and probably ten of them have never read a book with their kids (or even just read themselves and model the behavior.) These are families that are middle to upper middle class, have day shift or white collar jobs, and have the time to spend with their kids. It’s just not something they do. They’d rather focus on TV or phones or video games; all things that are fine, but in moderation. <br><br>I’m the friend that buys kids books at every birthday. It’s a gift that I LOVED as a kid, but now parents roll their eyes at me. It’s like books are just junk to them. Meanwhile I kept books for years and years and reread them constantly as a kid. It’s weird. I remember most kids reading at least comic books or something similar when I was young.

  I work in construction onsite. My coworkers think I&apos;m snooty because I read for fun. I&apos;m not cracking out War and Peace, but they see any type of books as me flaunting how I&apos;m &quot;better than them&quot;. It&apos;s taken a bit of work, but I&apos;ve convinced a few to pick up some books or at least read to their kids. They loved it.
