Clear the bad part and then from opposing sides hammer in two wedges, or multiples thereof, with epoxy paste. Allow to harden and then trim off the waste hammering surfaces.

I think the construction seems to have more than enough strength. If you can fill the gaps with epoxy, you can be happy. Probably the most important thing here is to protect the wood from water and moisture.

If you want you can use epoxy with the powder to thicken up and fill the gap. If the gap is larger take wood shims to fit in the gap and add epoxy to it and insert. That will give a solid structure. There's no need to rip apart. When Ran sail planked his boat, he glued the planks together before putting on the boat. You could try that might help speed up the planking party with your friends.
