I have always found Parkside tools to be good value and work well, sturdy but basic and functional

For an elecrtical detector to work the cable must be live and have current running through it. So if your looking for lighting cable, turn the light on first or it won't find it. That applies to any detector not just this one. Also Copper cable is not going to be reliably detected by metal detecting functions.

I bought a similar tap and die set from ALDI almost 20 years ago, for a few quid. The last time I had used a tap or die was 20 years prior to that, when I was teenage apprentice!

I’ve only used the set twice - once to tap a hole and the other cut a thread, but in both cases the job would have been impossible without the right tools. I’ve always been an electronics and software guy, but the skills I learnt during my 4-year mechanical engineering apprenticeship 40 years ago (especially safety skills) have served me well.

I bought a multifunction detector in ALDI (their Workzone brand) in Australia a couple of weeks ago. It looks almost identical to the Parkside device in this video - same functions (including ‘deep’), same shape, same display, same buttons, except the Workzone model does not have the separate AC switch - it’s just another mode.

The AC mode works perfectly on the Workzone model - it can successfully detect cables to light switches, even though the cables are in brick walls. Note that the cables must be powered (e.g. light switch on) for the AC to work.

At one point I thought AC detection was faulty - I wanted to drill holes for a shelf in the kitchen, and the whole wall was ‘lighting up’ as AC. I got up into the loft and found that the power cables for the mains sockets, induction hob, electric cooker, and extractor hood were all running down that wall! My Mrs was disappointed not have a shelf, but I’m glad I checked.

I’m now going to have to check if there’s a pencil hidden in the side of the device! I didn’t notice one when I was using it. I’ll be disappointed if the Workzone model doesn’t have a pencil 😂.

Stuart, You must have walked past the very best Lidl product on your way to the middle aisle: the fresh almond croissants at the bakery are the solution to every DIY problem. One of these with a mug of tea - the inspiration will appear.

Maybe in 2 years time recycling centres could have a bespoke green and red skip for Parkside tools to go in?

I bought the secateurs for my elderly mum as they are lightweight. They are great as secateurs (e.g. to trim roses). It's only 4V so don't expect to replace loppers with them. Parkside does do a 20v version on their battery platform which is great but heavier and less suitable for trimming roses.
