Chani, it might be nice if you contacted the store manager to share your positive experience with the young gentleman who assisted you. I'm sure he would appreciate the recognition, as people like him often go unnoticed by management etc.

Since my husband passed away, I notice a significant difference in how salespeople, auto repair, and waiters attend to me. It is as if a woman shopping or eating alone is an inconvenience. Add being a foreigner in a different country, and a language difference and I believe I would be seen as even more of an inconvenience. I am an introvert, so I will never demand service. I just leave. If I am seated hidden away at a restaurant and ignored, I don’t go back. I agree with those who suggest you send a note of praise and thanks to the manager. That young man did an outstanding job.

Reminds me of when I bought a sofa for a tiny apartment when I had just started living at Kanagawa (a long time ago). I stopped by a furniture store in the middle of an extended walk and decided to check it out and found the perfect one. After talking to the salesperson and getting to delivery, I realised I hadn't memorized my address yet. They said, no problem, we can deliver it right now and you can direct the driver to your apartment. So not only did I get a good sofa and free delivery I also got a taxi ride back from my walk, all this for a sofa that I think was only around 8,000 yen. When you find a place with good service in Japan it is exceptional.

I agree, Chani. I understand his Japanese. This young salesman is courteous, articulate, thorough, not pushy. He is good.

When I moved to Japan for university I lived in a student dorm, everything 和室 -style. I have severe backproblems, and after half a year sleeping on my futon (which I liked) my backpain got worse, so I decided to buy a matress. Even though my Japanese was still about N3-level the sales person showed me several matresses, asked about my backproblems and explained very well which matress would be best in my case. Top service! Matress was delivered the next day and I have to say, I never had a better, more comfy one, my back was a lot better! Years later and I still miss this matress...

The fridge looks amazing! In my experience, when I was in Japan, I was ignored by sales staff, and I saw the same happen to another foreigner. I think it was more due to shyness or insecurity about speaking English rather than anything else.

Store #1 sounds like a dream come true to me. No pushy salesmen accosting me while I'm browsing, I can take my time and then go find someone when im ready to buy.

I am happy you found a salesman who had an Omotenashi philosopy!

For a Latin American that considers the fridge as a family member, your story starts like a horror movie that thankfully ends well.

Hope you tell the manager about the outstanding gentleman that assisted you! That kind of personnel should be promoted and celebrated.
