Watching at 5:52am. The daily devastation of this country has me up earlier than usual. Thanks, Katie, for always bringing insightful conversations.

This was a great interview. Two experienced, calm and casual journalists having a genuine conversation about the history and the future of economy. And mostly derived from research and facts. No doubt, a complex topic, but this conversation was easy to follow. Thank you both!

Andrew Sorkin - hats off to you!!! You have simplified and put our current financial affairs in perspective for everyone who has fifth grade education. Hope, people are listening and will act on it. Otherwise, history will repeat.

The more I learn about how businesses keep trying to reach the president to influence decisions… the more leery I am of business people being governors or presidents.

In the world of American High Finance Andrew Ross Sorkin comes across as one of the few real human beings in the room. Thanks, Katie, from hosting him.

Herbert Hoover and the Republican Congress cut taxes on businesses and the wealthy in the days after the October 29, 1929 Stock Market Crash, in which, 90% of its value disappeared and 1/3 of US total wealth evaporated. Then Republican President Herbert Hoover implemented the Smoot-Hawley Tariffs. When asked why he didn't do anything for 25,000,000 Americans who lost their jobs and 10,000,000 families which became homeless, Hoover said helping the unemployed and homeless would make them LAZY. When Franklin "FDR" Roosevelt ran for Governor of New York in 1930, he saw elderly people in their 60's/70's/80's who lost all their saving when 9000 US BANKS went broke and became homeless. FDR promised his wife, Eleanor, that would never happen again if he had any say. That promise led to Social Security. FDR ran for President in 1932. Eleanor Roosevelt asked FDR to create a program for boys/girls from 12 to 17-years-old to work planting trees, building cabins and benches in US National Parks and manicuring and maintaining those parks. Eleanor Roosevelt had an ulterior motive, millions of these kids had known hunger and were not able to engage in any physical activity any longer which required money, schools were gutting recreational/intramural sports. So she wanted these kids to go to these parks and contribute to their maintenance by getting fresh air, exercise, hard work and good food.

"Taming the Street" by Diana Henriques is another great book that brings this period of time and cast of characters to life. It is a fascinating time period with the stock market crash, bank runs, banks failing, all of the inside trading, little/no/corrupt regulation, FDR using "fireside chats" on the radio to educate everyday Americans about what he was doing. I wish we had more speeches today that had FDR's style of rhetoric.
