  As someone who grew up in these Midwest communities, please understand that these are living memories and daily life for many. I just got our family recipe for potato salad passed down to me a few weeks ago to use for everyday meals. My spoken German is a mix of my grandparent's and their parents German, German from Indiana/Kansas, and Baden-Württemberg/school German . Extended family still has the original farmstead in Kansas. Our families came from a non-unified Germany and often the countryside - not the cities. Turner societies, Mens choruses, church groups, hearing German at home (yes - even my Opa used phrases when I was growing up), German on gravestones, midnight mass, Plattdeutsch, "how goes it?". It's not a single random "Onkel Fritz" in so many cases.

  Nice! What a great, fun way to get to know your ancestors. I always wondered if my father&apos;s mother had German ancestry or not, so now I want to find out.

  My family was from around Hannover. Mom would have loved to do this. Mom&apos;s family was Meyer and Dad&apos;s was Roscher also from around Hannover. The grew up in west central Missouri. Mom&apos;s cousin a professor wrote a book about the settlement in Concordia Mo.

  That&apos;s cool that people are meeting their cousins and seeing where their families came from. I&apos;ve always wanted to do something like this on sides of family that came to America more recently, that would be so fun.

  This was interesting to see. My Wisconsin German families had extensive records. On my Dad&apos;s side, my Great-Grandfather, his Grandfather, came here in 1862. My Dad was 17 when his Grandfather passed away. My Dad&apos;s mom, my Grandmother, was #5 of 6 children and the first born here in the U.S. in 1891. I knew her and my Mom&apos;s mom who came here at the age of 16 in 1892. I&apos;ve been to church services in my Great Grandfather&apos;s church in Barum, including Christmas Eve. I&apos;ve been to &nbsp;the German home of my Dad&apos;s mom&apos;s family in Tribsees and also to my Mom&apos;s mom&apos;s home in Kirch-Baggendorf. Both of those are in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. &nbsp;I have seen the church records in Kirch-Baggendorf where my Grandmother&apos;s baptism is recorded. My wife and I travel independently in Germany when there and have friends in the Hannover and Uelzen areas. What I haven&apos;t found yet are any direct relatives except one distant cousin near Dusseldorf. I keep digging.

  Not just the center in Bremerhaven but also the center „Ballinstadt“ in Hamburg has an comprehensive list of emigrants who departed via Hamburg.
