My man is going through the same crisis neoclassical architects went through when trying to recreate classical architecture.

Another category along the lines of the “Yes” category is fantasy consoles like the PICO-8.

They’re emulators simulating non-existent hardware with retro limitations. They have a bunch of games developed specifically for them.

I feel like the idea of retro has diverged into actual retro (chronological age) and lofi (low poly, pixel art, simplistic design). You cant make a new retro game in the same way you cant make aged wine, theyre inseparable from their age as the history and nostalgia surrounding a game is what makes it retro. A lofi game takes artistic queues from older games to both skirt the commercial need to push for fidelity and breathe now life into old styles and technology. The title of retro being used to describe both games that are old and games that pretend to be old feels confused as the constant march of improvement in games pushes one definition forward but not the other.

I'm reminded of cave paintings watching this video. There's a famously well preserved one full of hand paintings (maybe the Cueva de las Manos? memory is spotty) that you can still visit today.. At least for now, it's been under threat from vandalism and tourists stealing and touching the rocks for decades. They made a recreation of it in a museum in France I think that's more accessible, walls made of plaster, same style of art used to make the handprints, and apparently they were painstakingly adherant to the replication, even down to using the old tools. It's a beautiful work of preservation and art.. it just isn't what it pretends to be. For momnets you can feel at awe in the authentic style of this echo of a cave painting, but nothing will change that those hands panted on those walls are modern hands.

A good artistic direction will always age better than raw visual fidelity. We hit a peak with graphical detail a while ago and now the only games that seem to timelessly stand out are games that tend to lean heavier into good direction than the best graphics available.

There's something so calming about you when you speak about certain projects. I can tell it's a topic you love most of the time. Because you can feel the love you put in these videos, keep up the great work! Also I love the fact that you always shoutout smaller content creators.

Retro is when you play an old game and think "wow, they dont make them like they used to" and the problem with the PS3/360 is that when you go back to nearly 20 year old games like Uncharted 2, Assassins Creed 2, Bioshock, Gears of War, COD4, ect....uh yea thats basically how they still make them. I mean how much have the controls for those genres of AAA games even changed in _20 years_?

20:40 Saying that he is "just some random guy, not a top industry professional doing it" is under-crediting him a bit.
Kaze Emanuar has worked as a professional in the games industry, being employed as a game developer at Gears for Breakfast (the company behind 'A Hat in Time') working in UE5. According to his LinkedIn he is still there.
Though this was after A Hat in Time released, and it was partially on the grounds of Return to Yoshi's Island showing a professional level of aptitude, was rather than industry experience being acquired first then used for a the project.
Still, he has taken some the things learnt working there to make the game to a higher quality; notably in level design philosophy and the way missions are structured - it is not entirely something attributable to a "random guy" with no background.
A thing that may further bolster the conclusion at 21:40 is that Kaze is aiming to release a 'ship of Theseus' of the original game, intentionally. It will not include any of Nintendo's code or assets in it, partially as a preemptive step to maintain a favourable legal footing. Most of the original code and assets have already been replaced with more efficient alternatives, and it is part of the reason behind why so many optimisations are covered on the channel.
