You can't convince me there aren't like 5 clones of this guy running his various channels. We need a Wendigoon video on the Simon Whistler channels rabbit hole.

As a Nigerian, allow me to thank you for making this video on a lesser known issue like this😢 I frequently clash with Pan-Africanists here and online over this issue. They constantly talk about past slavery or colonialism and how slavery never existed in Africa, and they frequently blame Europeans. And whenever i mention how we still have slavery here and it's perpetuated by our own people, they go into denial and pretend it doesn't exist! Thanks for pushing against this narrative.

I learned about this from the Onion Geography book which was published in ~2007. The headline for Mauritania was "Holy F*ck They Still Have Slaves Here".

This is one of those times when I like to remind myself to be grateful that I was born where and when I was.

I've been to Mauritania a number of times for work. It's a bleak country. It's very poor and then the opulence of the palace (which you are not allowed to take photos of). Compared to its affluent neighbours of Senegal and Morocco it's the poor cousin living in the sticks. <br> The desert is beautiful in its own way. But it's definitely not a tourist destination. I'm glad I got to experience it but I won't be going back.

I went from knowing this place didn’t exist to knowing it’s the slavery capital of the world in the space of an hour. Thank you Simon Whistler Public Education System.

I've driven and travelled through Mauritania and we picked up a hitchhiker who brought us home to his mum where we stayed the night. It was a large old stone house in the desert. His elderly mum and brother's 2nd wife and 2 small kids were absolutely lovely. I helped to make dinner and we ate under the stars. It was one of most wonderful experiences of my life. Wonderful people. He was a professor and very open-minded though deeply piouds. He told us of how he fell in love with his wife and wouldn't want a second. We spoke openly of politics and even slavery. He was a humanist and an honour to meet. They were very poor and we ate what they had grown. His mum had terrible arthritis and i left them with painkillers which are not easy to come by there. We left them with hugs and most of our food.

I went there on business once. I realised quickly that the "help" were a lot more than that. I'm a native arabophone, but I speak Lebanese Arabic and had a very difficult time understanding Mauritanians. I got enough, though. I could not wait to get out of there. My great-grandfather's uncle was the one in our town that had to pay the jizya. We grew up knowing how he, though a monastic priest, was spat on, kicked, and abused as he crawled to pay the "let us live" tax. I felt sick to my stomach during the whole affair.
