I'm a mom of three teen girls that wanted me to watch anime with them.
Apothecary diaries is not only my favorite anime, with maomao as my favorite main character, but it's my favorite series (live action or otherwise) right now.

Extremely well written on the mysteries, character depth (even for side characters), comedy, world building, character arcs, and complex webs you dont see being woven.

Maomao grew up in major poverty by living within the slums and red light districts. That's why she's so small she basically grew up malnourished and because of her own drug experiments on her body could of also stunted her development as a child/teen. Hence why our girl is so teeny tiny.

Jinshi and Gyokuyou found the human equivalent of a feral cat in a back alley and decided to keep it.

in general, fair skin means you're well off and don't have to do manual work (like in the sun), so it's about social status too.

19:26 People in these kinds of dynasties usually became eunuchs either out of punishment, as a prerequisite to serve among the emperor's rear palace, or to be a royal guard who often had to guard the harem. So for some, it was a willing exchange. Willingly giving away their potential lineage, in exchange for power and privelege. While for others it was a punishment for failing to do their duties well.

They didn't use the powder on the baby, but the wet-nurse used it on herself, which of course the baby touched and then probably stuffed her fingers into her mouth, along with just getting some rubbed off onto her skin, too.

Apothecary diaries is peak fiction. Honestly I didn’t think a series like this was for me but then I finished the whole series in 2 weeks all 48 episodes can’t wait until season 3

12:59 Well spotted. Jinshi requested to have every serving girl around that height with freckles to be assembled and singled Maomao out because she alone, out of all of them, were able to read what he wrote. Everyone else just thought they were watching a calligraphy show, with no understanding of what was written.

I enjoyed your reaction, and hope you will all enjoy the show! Here are a couple of things that might be useful to know!

- The story is set in a fictional country (called Li) heavily based on imperial China. It's not set in a very specific time period, the author borrows from whatever time works best for the story she wants to tell.

- MaoMao is around 16/17 at the beginning of the show.

- The kidnappers sold MaoMao into indentured servitude, pretending to be her family. By the time the story starts, outright slavery has been banned, that's why there is a time limit of 2 years on her contract. It wasn't uncommon for poor families to sell their daughters into indentured servitude, since it gives the family an income (both initially when sold, and the family gets part of the servants paycheck), and removes the burden of having to provide for the child themselves.

- The powder wasn't used on the baby, the baby's wet-nurse used the powder on herself, and the baby ingested it while breastfeeding. It's also why the prince was so much sicker than the princess, since Concubine Lihua used the powder herself (Concubine Gyokuyou is naturally more pale herself, so she has no need to use whitening powder) so Lihua's baby was exposed to a lot more of the powder.

- Eunuchs in this story (like in imperial china) aren't simply castrated, they are fully emasculated (the external genitals are completely amputated). There are several reasons why men became eunuchs. Sometimes it would have been as punishment (generally to avoid execution), but in most cases, it would have been for money or influence. If you are born into extreme poverty, it was seen as a good way to help your family (you were paid well for giving up a son to the imperial family) and you'd have a guaranteed job and income for the rest of your life . They were often some of the most trusted servants, and could become quite wealthy and influential in certain circumstances, because they often had a lot of access to the imperial family and concubines.

the anime doesn't mention it really but Maomao is about 17 or 18 in ep 1. tbh age clarification in this show can kinda get confusing since the anime never talks about how old someone is.
