Have you ever said something embarrassing after waking up from anesthesia? 😂

It’s wild that hours can pass without feeling like even one second passed. Makes you wonder how much our sense of time depends on memory.

The framing of consciousness as an emergent network rather than a single region makes total sense. Anesthesia doesn't erase you; it just cuts the cross-brain communication keeping the show alive.

I’ve never had surgery myself, but both my sister and sister-in-law have, and I remember how strange it felt seeing them before and after. One moment they were talking to us, and then suddenly hours had passed for them.

I never really thought about what was happening during that gap. I just assumed they were asleep.

But the video’s explanation that anesthesia may disrupt communication between different parts of the brain, rather than sending consciousness somewhere else, is honestly mind-blowing. The idea that your brain can temporarily lose the connections that create your sense of time, self, and awareness makes those post-surgery moments feel completely different.

Now I’m looking at their recovery in a completely different way.

The most interesting part isn't that anesthesia shuts consciousness down. It's that we still can't fully explain what “you” actually are when that consciousness disappears. If the brain is still physically there but the experience of being “me” is temporarily gone, then maybe the biggest mystery isn't where consciousness goes… but why it exists at all.

About 22 years ago, I had a unique situation, when I slipped and hit my head hard on a concrete floor. And when I regained consciousness, in the hospital emergency room five hours later, I slowly began to wake up, similar to being anesthetized.

The not so funny situation at the time, was I contacted my former mother-in-law, explaining to her that I was in hospital. In my waking up state, I thought that I was still engaged to be married to her daughter. That's how severe the concussion was

I’ve had to go under anesthesia for surgery before. The doctor counted, “1, 2, 3,” and then I just drifted into unconsciousness—I don’t remember anything after that. It’s fascinating to watch a video that explores and unpacks this mysterious experience.

It’s identical to dying. Or as close as we’ll get without actually dying.
