  I spent a good portion of my life flying in the back of CH-47s and MH-47s. &nbsp;They always got me and the fellas in and out of some incredibly sticky situations especially in Afghanistan. &nbsp;They always brought me home to my family. &nbsp;Thank you, Mr Berlin.

  The P-36 had another strength: a constant-speed propeller, which was rare at the time. This gave superior true power across the flight envelope, helped with average fuel economy, &nbsp;and made the aircraft much easier to fly in combat.

  One of the most underrated legends and gems of WWII. One of very few allied fighters capable of &quot;out turning&quot; Japanese equivalents (Ki-43l; a nightmare for Germany over France; a dogfighting thoroughbred for the Finns. <br><br>Beauty, but criminally forgotten!

  Curtiss built a superior airframe knowing the current motors were weak &amp; that bigger options were forthcoming.<br>P36 was a place holder for the P40s.<br>Imagine if motor tech had been more advanced in 1936-38ish...

  I’ve been told that one of the P-36s from Pearl Harbor was bought at scrap value and ended up at the Jackson County, MI airport (KJXN). &nbsp;The owner died and it sat at the end of the runway for years. &nbsp;<br><br>Eventually the boss told one of the workers to get rid of it because he didn’t want to see it anymore, so the worker took a backhoe, dug a hole, and buried the aircraft at the end of the runway whole, gas still in the tank.<br><br>It’s still there - the guy who told me about it works at the airport and said they went with poles to search for it, and felt the tink of metal.<br><br>As I understand it, it’s free to whoever wants to dig it up. &nbsp;At least, I was offered a free P-36 from Pearl Harbor - I just have to come and dig it up (too big a trip for me - but maybe somebody else can find and restore it?).<br><br>If this is a true story, I’d love if somebody could investigate and see that such a historic aircraft doesn’t go to waste.
