I was waiting for this!!!! The whole "who watches the watchmen" situation where the therapist needs a therapist but she's the only one is so compelling

11:58 We know that Gale's method doesn't work for Joel because he storms off and witholds what "saving her" means. When at the start he is more willing to trust her.

The second she poured a drink, I was oh. We're 100% not doing this. I'm out the door.

I was watching this with some friends, who kept saying how well Gale was doing, and that they liked her... I was wondering if we were watching the same show, because the whole interaction made me uncomfortable, and I kept thinking "a therapist wouldn't do/say that, right? that seems so wrong"

It's about a dynamic that would never exist in "normal" world, since a therapist wouldn't have for a client the person she knew had killed her husband, even if the stated reasoning was understandable.

I think the thing I like about this scene is that the show doesn’t vindicate her doing this, or at least I didn’t feel like it did. Like obviously we sympathize with her losing her husband and then having to give therapy to the guy who killed him, but the show itself doesn’t really frame her snapping at him like this is the correct thing. Like most of the things people do in this show, this was just something she did. And her doing this didn’t even work at getting him to tell her the truth that she wanted. He still avoided answering and then left. Which was completely fair after all that.

They weren’t trying to show a good therapy session, so I appreciate that they didn’t frame it like it was totally okay she did that.

Also, side note, the acting? She killed that scene man. Absolutely phenomenal.

The "you may never want to do therapy again" hit me deep... I went to therapy for three years, and thinking back I got so many red flags from my therapist that I'm actually glad she ghosted when quarantine hit because she had to "focus on her most important cases".
I once let slip that I am asexual while talking about a friend, and she spent the WHOLE HOUR of my session trying to "help me process the s*xual trauma that made me scared of s*x" while I tried to explain to her that NO, I am just like this. Another time she told me she didn't care if I "thought I had ADHD and wanted to get tested", she wasn't there to "give labels" but to "help with the problem".
I'm still trying to find the courage to find another therapist.

I think Jackson existing (and having existed for years) is so interesting. So much zombie/apocalyptic media doesn't really seem to include fully-established communities (The Walking Dead gets close, but most of theirs feel either 1) dystopian 2) tentative, like they're still finding their feet). So Jackson having people with jobs that aren't focused on combat -- Seth being a cook, Gail being a therapist, even the guy -- presumably a farmer? -- in the meeting who was focused on discussing the crops -- I don't know, it all felt fascinating. How those various roles would function in a world that's adjacent to ours, but so different.

The thing I love about the Last of Us (game and series) is that it's all about trauma. Every single person over the age of 25 in that world is massively, profoundly traumatised, not just as who they lost, but what they lost (their entire world), and the existentially horrific way they lost it. Then you've got the under 25s, the ones who only know the world as it is now, having to learn and understand without having anyone who wasn't born in an entirely different world to show them how. Gale's just as broken as everyone else, psychotherapy is the only thing she can contribute, and everyone leans on her to deal with their own wreckage - and she's got nobody to deal with hers. As she says herself in a later episode she's a total disaster. As a 57 year old who's lived with CPTSD all my live and was diagnosed at 38, there's a lot I can identify with in all the characters in this. It is so well written - there are no heroes, no-one who overcomes, it's just damaged people getting by however they can, however messily they can manage. And that's beautiful in my book.
