I am now 54. The line "When you grow up, your heart dies. It's inevitable" is something I took as a challenge, and it's a fundamental part of why I am the way I am now.

I remember how the newsmedia would refer back on this film with terms like "cutesy", and I was thinking "Are you talking about when that wrestler kid confessed about brutally assaulting another kid, another kid showed his cigarettes burns from his father, or that other kid's suicide attempt? That film?"

I've seen this movie countless times, and I've only just realised that Bender mocks everyone else's lunch to disguise that he doesn't have one himself, which isn't surprising considering his abusive home life. Also, Carl the Janitor is shown as "Student of the Year, 1969" in the photograph at the beginning.

This film is a 90-minute act of empathy towards teenagers. It is timeless as it is nurturing.

Fun fact: The scene where they are in the circle talking about why they got detention, was fully improvised. Hughes wanted the cast to come up with what they thought each teen would have been in detention for.

I liked that they took Alyson’s struggle seriously. “They ignore me” <br>I was her in high school.

Something I notice in this movie is every time Bender picks on Brian, Andy laughs before you see the realization color his face and switches to defending Brian. Because while Andy is almost intrinsically a jock, he's going through somewhat of an identity crisis because he'd recently realized that being in this group means treating people horribly and humiliating the weak, and he doesn't enjoy it.

One of the most clever parts of the film is the lunch scene. Each of the characters’ lunches fit their backgrounds: Brian has a PB& J, apple juice and soup since it’s brain food; Andrew has multiple sandwiches, cookies, basically carbs he has to build up for fitness; Allison had Pixie Stix powder on White Bread with Captain Crunch because she’s the oddball; Claire got sushi, the most expensive to represent her being the richest and Bender brought nothing because his family was poor. And of course they each get soda from the vending machine. That part was brilliantly done.

The scene where Molly Ringwald’s character is honest makes me think of two things my mom taught me. She said, “Don’t ever ask a question unless you’re 100% sure you want the answer.” She drilled that into my head. It summed up her philosophy on relationships. The other thing she always said was “Never get angry at someone for not giving you what they’re not capable of giving. Love them for who they are and for what they can give you.”

I'll never forget one of my high school teachers let us watch The Breakfast Club and used the lesson to teach us as freshmen that we should keep an open mind as we meet other people in high school and life. It's crazy to me that my teacher could find that one for us. Enjoy your Tuesday, everyone!
