I have several diesel engines. I have stayed with mechanical diesels. There is a small amount of extra maintance but I can do it myself. I don't depend on anyone but myself to keep things running.

One thing not mentioned here is the quality of the fuel that goes into the tank,beware of cheap fuel.

Not all mechanics are the same. Mine happened to mention that he had put a "summer" oil into the engine instead of the right grade specified on the filler cap. I decided to do my own servicing from then. That's the only way to know what's going on. Later, I serviced the differential. Supposed to be re-oiled every couple of years or so. It was totally dry. DIY saves needless wear, and depreciation costs if you change vehicles every 3 to 5 years just to avoid maintenance.
