I remeber reading about Sarah Baartman while attending uni a couple of years ago. The full story is even more brutal and heartbreaking. She suffered a lifetime of rape and abuse and even after death European institutions refused to bury her body, keeping her naked body and sexual organs on display for decades. Truly deprived, brutal stuff.

I live in the Sarah Baartman District Municipality, which covers 58,000 square kilometres and is one of the largest in South Africa. It's home to just over half a million people. Her remains have been repatriated, her grave is a National Heritage Site, and her story is part of the national curriculum. At least she will not be forgotten.

I think whats fascinating is that thankfully that era of human zoos is over but the aspects of our culture which served as the impetus for the "human zoos" still exists, even if it isn't as crude or explicit as it once was. I think theres a very good argument to be made that alot of the youtubers who go to poor countries and vlog there are essentially part of the same cultural phenomenon.

Thats not to say every kind of anthropology is a modern "human zoo," I think people can absolutely love to witness and learn about other cultures without participating in human-zoo-like-behavior. But I don't think we can discount the idea that this kind of Youtuber-vlogging is part of this same cultural heritage to some degree.

The shot of the baby's grave at 16:25 is so haunting. The lichen / erosion on the gravestone and on the picture of the baby's face... Almost like it's being actively forgotten, swept away by time. Making the victim of these atrocities almost literally faceless and anonymous

Thank you for making sure they are remembered

People today are quick to dismiss, deflect or outright reject any responsibility in the role they play in modern exploitation.

Part of the cobalt in our phone battery is mined by children in Congo. Cheap furnitures, fast fashion, endless consumption. All of it resting on systems of extraction that would have been familiar to the people running those zoos.

Just like the visitors back then were quick to absolve themselves by saying they didn't ask for these "performers" to be displayed in a zoo, people today absolve themselves by claiming they didn't ask for the cobalt to be mined by kids...

Outrage about the past is cheap. It costs nothing. No sacrifice, no discomfort, no change in behavior.
If you're not willing to sacrifice anything for your values then you have no values, just preferences.

Crazy it was so recent.. Here is another fact: Mauritania was the last country in the world to abolish slavery, doing so by presidential decree in 1981. While officially abolished then, it was not until 2007 that the practice was criminalized and punished by law. Despite these measures, instances of slavery continue to be reported in the country.
