  Portuguese here!<br>By the end of the 90&apos;s, my (now ex) husband was struggling with addiction. During his treatment, I also had appointments with a psychologist at a Government faciity to help me heal from all the stress and emotional damage caused by his addiction, and to understand his behaviors and help him go through the healing process. I think it&apos;s really important to educate yourself and built some mental structure to deal with this disorders. Family and friends can also take part of the healing path if they want to. <br>Sorry for my English and take care :)

  The worst part of Oregon failing is that now everyone thinks harm reduction is pointless at best and counterproductive at worst…when in reality the lesson from Oregon is precisely what this video says. You can’t do just one part. You have to invest in every part of the process.

  I&apos;m a former heroin addict, clean 10 years. This model is exactly what I&apos;ve always dreamed of. <br>I couldn&apos;t tell you how many times I wanted to put my foot down and just call the cops on a friend. But didn&apos;t, because I didn&apos;t want to be the reason they went to jail. Some of those friends might still be around if I had.

  I&apos;m Portuguese, I remember seeing on national news at the time an addict that agreed to be filmed 24/7 during his recovery. He agreed to go a few days without drugs and all the shaking and suffering of that person was filmed and transmitted in prime time. This gave a clear picture to everyone on how bad drugs can be and I myself Everytime I see an addict those images come to my mind, and I know how bad that person will suffer just to get out of it.

  I grew up very near Quinta das Lapas, I used to drive past it every day. Portugal has its issues, but their approach to addiction is something I&apos;m extremely proud of. When my parents moved to Lisbon in the early 90s, hard drugs and prostitution were rampant, instead of just slapping on the label &quot;evil&quot; like America does, people recognised people, and a little amount of empathy and compassion proceeded to then save the lives of thousands.<br>Portugal, you suck at finances and bureaucracy, but you created some of the kindest, most compassionate people in the world and I consider myself very lucky to have been born and molded by you.

  As someone who has friends and family who&apos;ve struggled through rehab, drug use, and overdoses—and as someone who has had some family and friends sadly die from overdose—I really appreciate this video. You center rehabilitation and humanity and it is so helpful and honest and meaningful.

  Of course, Portugal had one other thing that made their approach successful - no one was profiting from the imprisonment of people caught with drugs; Prisons are State run and maintained with no independent contractors lining their own pockets.

  When I voted to decriminalize drugs in Oregon, it was presented as if there would be rehabs and stuff, but what actually happened was a fine or a drug addiction class (actually a hotline, we fucked up bad). There&apos;s still no housing for all the unhoused people with myriad health problems and it also didn&apos;t increase the rehabs/beds offered. This also hit when fentanyl hit the streets. Bad combo. So there isn&apos;t housing or a system ready to handle this so it was ham fisted. I am someone with addiction and stuff and I&apos;m in Portland and went through addiction and housing services, so I know this stuff intimately. I could tell when it was rolling out that it wasn&apos;t enough, I thought it was a class not a fucking hotline. The private institution thing is true in Portland too, and they aren&apos;t well integrated. Healthcare in the US is not well integrated with each other because it&apos;s all privatized. I found this as a disabled person. It&apos;s really stupid.

  As a 59 year old life long drug addict, (I&apos;ve been off &amp; on since I was 12), it&apos;s been my experience that addiction has everything to do with healthy connections with others. When I sobered up, the first time, I was checked into my first, of way to many, rehabs, by my parents @ 17. After the primary care I was sent to a halfway house. What I witnessed there was amazing. There was 50 of the most broken &amp; traumatized teenagers you&apos;ve ever seen, and we began to flourish. It&apos;s not like we had to work on fixing our bad behavior. As we healed and began to communicate and connect in a healthy manner it just changed, like magic.

Re-criminalization happened through state congress, which passed an amendment to the bill through OR HB4002, which completely undercut the decriminalization effort.
