This is about a slum but so much more than that. Because when you hear “slum” you think miserable people living miserable lives. But no. Not in Makoko. There’s a sense of something else: happiness? Yes. I do believe so. Not that they don’t want or need more. They do. But still - the sense of community glows above and beyond the poverty. Beautifully shot documentary by Turkish doc filmmakers.

The funeral at the start genuinely made me so happy. It was such a unique and heartfelt way to send someone off, for religious reasons or otherwise. Hearing his daughter speak about him and dance with him was very heartwarming. The way that so many were involved to make sure the man had a good send off is very nice to watch

This documentary left out some very important aspects of the reason that settlement exists and why it's in the shape it is right now.

The Egun (Ogu) people are all not technically Nigerian. There were 2 languages spoken throughout the documentary, Yoruba (my language) and Gun (the language of the Egun) They were previously under the control of the Oyo Empire hence their familiarity with the Yoruba people but slightly differeing cultures. They are people of the Diahomey empire (modern-day Benin Republic) So, Egun people are from the Benin republic.

They migrated to Nigeria during the Dahomean war and settled in parts of Lagos, particularly Badagry and Makoko. The Makoko settlement is problematic because it is not recognized by the government. It is deemed illegal hence why no services are available to them (Service delivery is still a major problem due to corruption and a lack of maintenance culture in Nigeria). They are forced to do what they have to do to survive.

With the rise in the new rich in Nigeria, the government is planning to displace them without any provisions which will create additional issues for them. Unfortunately, the future looks bleak for them.

I feel for those children, born in a life and place they never chose but have to learn to survive. Everyone deserves a better life on this earth. They remind me of my life in the slum and on the streets but now I am doing my masters degree. With God, there is always light at the end of the tunnel.

God is good, we have so much to be thankful for, we are so blind.

They refer to the boats as 'rudimentary canoes', but they're clesrly being built by skilled, experienced craftsmen. Smacks of condescension to me.

Imagine how bad that place smells 😮. We in the west take so much for granted. Every documentary about countries that are very poor when they interview some of the children they all say "I want to go to school and become a doctor or teacher" or something like that. We in the west take school totally for granted and try to find ways to get out of going. Amazing contrast
