New dad here. Super thankful for all the work you do. Hearing from other dads, especially experts like Richard, is something I'd love more of

My 5y old still is still going to kindergarden. Apart from the caretaker, the entire staff are women. But I show him the world and teach him all sorts of stuff: We go swimming, biking, running (surprisingly fast for his age) and recently, he did his first pull-up.

8:00 WOW I relate to this. And my god, the timetable for some self-care things is SO long, at least for my kids, that it’s difficult to know what’s a normal range and when it’s a real problem.

Love this conversation! Interesting info on oxytocin with mothers cuddling and fathers facilitating transition to independence. Sounds magically like a complete biological puzzle to help kids feel safe and let them be independent. The study about teenage girls and their relationship with their father playing a significant factor in their mental health later on seems almost obvious but also really powerful to me. 💛

Thanks for this conversation. Richard Reeves has definitely been one of my best resources on raising my son. Thankfully my sons birthday is right after the school cuttof so he was naturally redshirted but if I hadnt found Reeves book I mightve pushed for him to start earlier. I'm so glad hes getting an extra year, he needs it.

This was. great listen - I wish you guys tackled what to do if the father figures is not present or able to step up, it makes those of us mothers who feel alone in this feel like we don't have a solution to the issues you discuss.

I'm the proud dad of a fine young lady, but I'm also the son of a single mother and I've never had a positive male role model. I never really experienced what a "dad" even is. My perception of dads was based on 80s sitcoms. So I think it's understandable that my approach to parenting is more feminine or motherly and I'm not ashamed by it. It's what attracted me to Good Inside. And I think that, frankly, parenting a daughter now is easier than parenting a son. There's decades of resources to help raise women as strong independent leaders and I've said for a long time my missed opportunity was the challenge of raising a son. As a feminist, I know that the patriarchy hurts men, too. And while we've been doing well in raising our girls, I feel like we've been falling short on raising our boys. I'm glad Dr. Becky and many others are here to say that connection is the solution to disregulation and that there is always time for repair. We have to throw out "Do as I say and not as I do" and instead model the behavior we want them to adopt to become resilient and independent. My job as a parent is to make my "JOB" obsolete, but I will always gladly play a support role. As my daughter's independence grows, her reliance on me should decrease. As an adult, I hope she would want to be in our company not out of obligation or gratitude, but because we gave her the skills, the scaffolding, and the trust to do so.

Very interesting convo. I totally agree about the starting school too young for boys. Our district’s cut off date is December 1st, so kids like my son, who’s birthday is in November, are supposed to start kindergarten at 4! It’s way too young. I remember how tiny he looked compared to the other kids in his preschool class and how he didn’t seem able to totally keep up, especially with the girls who had birthdays shortly after his and were essentially a whole year older. We held him back and I’m so glad we did. He’s 12 now and I just can’t imagine him in the next grade.

I also really enjoyed the information about the differences in how moms and dads interact with their kids. My husband is an excellent dad but I’ve definitely had to hold my tongue a few times about him doing things like tossing our kids around. I was never actually worried for them but it felt so uncomfortable for me. Definitely something to try and let go of and also encourage.
