Last Free Place in AMERICA PT. 3 Slab City, Salvation Mountain, East Jesus in California

Welcome to the final episode of my journey to The Last Free Place in America. In this episode, I travel deep into Slab City, California, a place many call the last free place in America. There are no laws or rules here. There is no police department or official government. People simply find a piece of land that isn't claimed and live there. It's an off-grid community where people live without paying rent. There are no utilities like electricity, running water, or sewer. Many people rely on trading goods and services instead of using money. The community is known for its freedom, independence, and lack of government oversight, making it one of the most unique places in the country. To enter Slab City, I drive over a mineral hot springs river, which was accidentally created by the United States military while drilling in the area. My first stop is the incredible Salvation Mountain, where I climb to the very top for breathtaking views of the surrounding desert. Even more incredible is the story behind it. It was created by a homeless man named Leonard Knight, who spent nearly 30 years building the mountain by hand using adobe, straw, and more than 100,000 gallons of donated paint. Today, it stands as one of the world's most unique works of folk art and attracts visitors from across the globe. From there, I visit a local Trading Post, where I trade two grapefruits for an item and meet the owner, who shares Slab City's history, its people, and what makes this community so different from anywhere else. Next, I explore East Jesus, an incredible outdoor art installation filled with unique sculptures and creative artwork made from recycled materials. I walk through all the exhibits and meet one of the people working there. Things then take an unexpected turn when I visit the Church of Enlightenment, home to one of the tallest structures in Slab City, where I almost get attacked and end up getting kicked out. Before leaving Slab City, I stop by the famous Slab City Gift Shop, browse the merchandise, pick up a few souvenirs, and chat with the owner. To end the day, I head to Windmill Market in Desert Hot Springs with my parents to enjoy the best date shakes in the California desert. I chat with the owner, Lee, relax on the beautiful outdoor patio, and unexpectedly meet a famous actor. If you've been following this series, thank you for coming along on the journey.
