I know more than ever that I prefer classic Zelda over BotW Zelda and always will. How do you feel about the two different approaches?

I try and beat every 3D Zelda game every year.

I wouldn’t say I prefer one type over the other. They are so different, and such different experiences. It’s almost like playing a completely different game. I just have to be in the right mood for a linear game, and another mood for an open world

Been on a similar journey. I’ve beaten wind waker, oot, started and haven’t finished skyward sword. Started a new file in my original GameCube twliight princess and currently playing majora’s mask on my nso. I absolutely love classic linear Zelda. My dream is the same as so many other have. A true merger of the botw/totk exploration heavy focus open world style with the linear story with item based progression through incredible themed dungeons like they had in older 3d Zelda games. Imagine exploring a new world the size of botw (totk might be too big) but with 8-12 fully fledged Zelda dungeon on the same caliber as what we had in oot, twilight princess, and even skyward sword. Having the freedom to explore each area at your own leisure then deciding ok let me focus on the story then doing a classic Zelda dungeon which directly impacts the story and progression of the game in a meaningful way. That would be so incredible. I think shrines with the same themes, enemies, music and rewards should be a thing of the past. If they are going to keep doing shrines make them unique to the biome they are in with different enemies, biome based visuals and substantial rewards. I could go on forever with ideas on how I would make the next Zelda better than botw and totk. There is so much potential there but only time will tell what Nintendo decides to do.

The game hasn’t been dethroned, it remains the number 1 ranked game of all time near 40 years from release.

Ocarina of Time is just a faithful remaster, same thing as Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door [Switch Version], all new visuals and an identical game with some quality of life features.

3DS version is the definitive edition. Which is an all new visuals remaster as well.

My hope is for Nintendo to figure out how to marry both formulas. Gimme the big open world with tight linear dungeons.

BotW had insane replay value for me, ranging from casually trying different types of runs and paths, to more of a speedrunner mindset sometimes. I did some of that with TotK but what set it apart didn't have the same legs. The best thing was probably the run without paraglider, reminds you that restriction can add value to what you're doing.

I own (mostly) every The Legend of Zelda game released on the Switch, but the only games in the series that I've actually played through and beaten are 'A Link to the Past' on the SNES, 'The Wind Waker' on the GameCube, and 'Twilight Princess' on the Wii. The latter two I also owned and beat on the Wii U.

The remaining games I have never played. I got 60 hours into BotW and beat 2 of the Divine Beasts, but got distracted by other games. I started Skyward Sword on the Wii, but never made it beyond the opening area, and eventually sold the game. I started it again on the Switch, but (again) got side tracked by other games, and only made it just beyond the opening area of the game. I started Link's Awakening, but got side tracked after about an hour or so, and moved onto other games. I started Echoes of Wisdom when it came out, but got side tracked by other games after a couple of hours.

The story goes on.

For someone who claims to be a long time fan of The Legend of Zelda, I have a lot of the series still to experience for the very first time! 😅

Traditional Zelda has a lot in common with Metroidvanias. It is no surprise to me that you have a preference for them, just like me.

I think the issue here, or at least the difference in philosophy, is the concept of needing to complete the games or at least finishing the main story before starting another game. What I mean is when I've replayed BOTW or TOTK, I do it over a long period of time in between playing other games.

For example, when the Switch 2 came out, alongside playing Mario Kart World, I started a new play through of TOTK with the enhancements. I played around 60 hours and got around half of the game. Then, I moved on to other games. But from time to time after that, I've picked up the game again and played it in batches completing and exploring whatever, not really focused on getting to the end, just doing what I found to be the most fun, knowing that eventually, one day, I'll reach the end again.

In the end, that's what both BOTW and TOTK are about, you charting out your own adventure and playing it at your speed. Since at the end of the day, you can decide whenever the game is done for you, as the final boss will always be available to battle pretty early on both games.

I agree with your opinion on Wind Waker. The best Zelda in my opinion would be a bigger world explored linearly, with optional areas uncloked later, and traditionnal dungeons. So basically like old Zelda but with a larger world. And put back quirky and interesting characters like Dampe, or the poe seller etc.
