  I recently discovered your channel and have watched many of your videos.  It's enjoyable to hear commentary from a knowledgeable musician.  Plus, I've learned new jargon like ostinato,  cadenza, crescendo, and glockenspiel.  Now I can use these terms and impress my friends !

  A sloop is a small boat with a single mast and 2 sails. As others have pointed out the Beach Boys were having fun with an old song from the Caribbean.Wander around in the Florida Keys and you hear multiple variations of it

  &quot;Sloop John B&quot; was brought to Brian by another group member, Al Jardine, and was released as a standalone single. It was not conceived as part of the overall <i>Pet Sounds</i> project. Some fans of the album argue it doesn&apos;t &quot;belong&quot; because of that but I&apos;ve always felt it fits just fine. Just a note: you describe it as being in the &quot;middle&quot; of the album but its original position in the sequence was as a &quot;side closer.&quot; Albums had two sides and the opening and closing tracks of a side were the most important choices made by the musicians and producers for the overall listening experience. &quot;Sloop John B&quot; with its fade out and the thematic sense that the singer is still somehow stranded out at sea was an effective end to Side 1.

  The song’s lyrics are actually from a traditional folk song from the Bahamas.

  Sloop John B is my favorite song by anyone , anywhere. Anytime. Very special to me. So many memories.

  Almost all of the songs on this album was played by the famous L.A. session group &quot; The Wrecking Crew.&quot; Brian Wilson worked heavily with this group that got their name when older musicians complained that the &quot;Younger,&quot; more casually dressed musicians were going to &quot;Wreck,&quot; the industry. Over time, the label turned into a badge of honor for the group that revolutionized modern recording. One of the members of &quot;The Wrecking Crew,&quot; was a young country legend Glen Campbell. The Wrecking Crew played session music for hundreds of the biggest artists of the 60`s and 70`s like Frank Sinatra, The beach Boys, Simon and Garfunkel, The Righteous Brothers, etc. You could almost do a separate reaction to the video of The Wrecking Crew.

  The bass player for the recording was the inimitable Carol Kaye of &quot;The Wrecking Crew&quot;. &nbsp;Members of that loose aggregation of standout musicians were all over the recording studios in the 60&apos;s.

  to understand the beach boys from this era, you have to keep in mind brian wilson was somewhere between lucidity and reality but mostly completely out of his mind, and, yet, was the mastermind behind everything

Sails&quot;) is a Bahamian folk song from Nassau. A transcription was published in 1916 by Richard Le Gallienne, and Carl Sandburg included a version in his The American Songbag in 1927. There have been many recordings of the song since the early 1950s, with variant titles including &quot;I Want to Go Home&quot; and &quot;Wreck of the John B

  Sloop John B” is originly a traditional Bahamian folk song, originally known as “The John B. Sails.” It was documented at least as early as 1916, decades before the Beach Boys recorded it in 1966. By the 1920s it was reportedly so well known around Nassau that it had acquired something like the status of a local anthem.<br>The boat was reportedly a sponge-fishing boat with a crew that was known to get rowdy. The reason that they can&apos;t go home is that the captain is ashore. If the captain returned, they could go home. Hope that helps.
