I can give you a few insights, Florence was built in 1994, I was finishing my last two yrs of a 10yr sentence. I was sent there with a hundred or so others. We were sent to finish setting up the grounds and to make sure the system would run smoothly when the prisons opened in 1995. At this time the idea was to have a minimum security facility surrounding a medium security facility with a maximum facility in the middle going down 2 stories deep. So the idea was if someone from the max wanted to escape they would have to escape out of three prisons. Since leaving I have heard it's changed. The minimum and medium is gone and Is now just a supermax and prisoners can work through to get more privileges with less security. Places like USP Leavenworth are like giant medieval cathedrals. With just bars locks and keys. Unlike Florence which had doors with buzzers and cameras everywhere, It was the first of its kind with all the hightech gear that's normal today. It really was the first of its kind. But like I said that was 1994/1995 I'm sure somethings have changed.

I want you all to know that there are signs along the highway on both directions from some Penitentiaries saying "Do NOT pick up hitchhikers as they may be prisoners" they have the signs in Cañon City. 😅

El Chapo is NOT an escape artist. His men did all the work and he just walked out. He didn't even do the planning. He just gave the order. Easy as pressing a button.

McVeigh was one of the few inmates transferred OUT of ADX Florence, albeit to be executed in Terre Haute, Indiana.

Now every time I hear “ADX Florence” my brain automatically tacks “and the Machine” to the end. So thanks for that!

True fact: the Aspen Acres Fire (started 6/29/2026, still burning) in Colorado required evacuation of tens of thousands of acres, including areas near Supermax. Supermax and its perimeter were not included because the facility is designed to withstand catastrophic fire and enable the inmates to shelter in place. The fire ultimately changed direction and is currently headed toward Sand Dunes National Park (I doubt it will get that far).

To be clear, it is the only FEDERAL SuperMax. There are other similar STATE facilities.
