good thing to remember if you encounter a bear:

if its black, fight back
if its brown, lie down
and if its white, say goodnight.

He had what I often call “selfish love”. His love for the bears was selfish and loved them for what he saw in them and not what they actually were. He didn’t care to learn about their actual body language or their actual mannerisms. He didn’t care to respect their boundaries or space.

People keep talking about how much he loved them, but if you truly love animals you show them the respect they deserve. You learn how to love them the way they need or want to be loved.

This is a similar mentality of animal hoarders who truly do seem to care about their animals but their actions show otherwise

Timothy didn’t need publicity, he needed therapy, and truckloads of it.

I watched the Werner Herzog documentary about Timothy Treadwell called "Grizzly Man" that you mentioned and ultimately agreed with Herzog; Treadwell meant well and was a kind man, but he had a tendency to anthropomorphize and underestimate the bears he was interacting with. I think it's a great thing to want to respect, appreciate, and admire nature, but that respect, appreciation, and admiration also has to come with boundaries and safety measures for both yourself and the animals you appreciate.

Timothy seemed like a good dude and clearly didn't deserve what happened, but I think this also stands as a strong cautionary tale as to why people probably shouldn't try stuff like this.

"Bears don't give a shit about whether you think you're spiritual with them or not" 😂😂😂

Despite everything, I think its very poetic his ashes were spread in the forest, forever resting with the bears.

I find the death of Timothy and his girlfriend to be absolutely tragic but I also find the death of the bear to be absolutely tragic. That bear was most likely in his last ditch attempt to get enough food, just doing what a bear would do around this time of year. The bear is a bear and is gonna do what it takes to survive and Timothy was prey, and after all that the bear was also killed:/ the animals often suffer as well when humans who think they're being helpful really arent being so.

People don't realize bears and wolves have generally learned to stay away from humans really since those who kept getting too close or into civilization wouldn't come back. Unless you're seeking them out, you probably won't encounter one unless they're wandering out of their turf because they're desperately hungry or thirsty. Even heavily trafficked camping areas are usually pretty safe in that respect from what I understand.

I had no idea about his background. All I ever heard about this was that he was basically a nature photographer or something, who loved bears and broke the park rules to get a little too close to the bears. This makes a lot more sense now how this happened.

Can't help but feel torn about this. It's a tragic tale but Timothy's actions got him, Aimee and (eventually) a bear killed.

I went backpacking in Alaska about 10 years ago, in Denali. When you're planning trips into these parks you have to speak to rangers first while you're plotting your trip so they can educate you and so that the park knows generally where you are. During that talk, the rangers all tell you the best defense against grizzlies is consistent, not sharp or surprising noise. So you don't startle any bears and get yourself killed. For this reason they sell bells you strap to your pack or tell you to carry on a conversation or sing a song while you hike. That's probably part of what kept Timothy alive there so long. He never stops talking. Legitimately, that probably contributed to it.
