At first the voicemail sounded like a toddler crying but later on it doesn't even sound human anymore.

And the moral of this story is, never abandon your drunk friends. Stay in a group!

On Halloween, 20 years ago (I was 27 at the time), I heard my pickup door close, at 2am. I lived in a rural area, so I went out to see what was going on, and was shocked to see a young girl sitting in my pickup. I opened it, angrily, and asked her what the hell she was doing. She told me she was "Trying to get away from the things coming out of the ground." I told her to get out of there.

After going in, I should have called the cops, but at the time I was worried about what would happen if they saw a drugged out teenage girl at my house. I saw her by the road, and she was staring at the darkness, shivering. I asked her if she was cold, she said yes. I told her I'd get her home. She told me she was 16, and her friends dropped her off out there. That pissed me off. A place with no street lights, and no shoulders, just ditches. Anyway, her acid trip started getting worse, and she led me to two places where there wasn't a house. I decided to drive her to Denny's.

I made her call her mom, and her mom told her to get me to drive her home. I had Denny's hit redial, and told her to get the fuck out of bed and get her daughter. Some cops showed up who happened to just be there on a break, and I was so done with it, I didn't care. I just told them what was going on. Then the mom showed up and the cops wouldn't let me leave until she verified my story.

Anyway, I know that was a lot, but I think that could be what happened to Henry, especially if he was drugged. Maybe someone tried to help, and they frustratingly finally just dropped him off. Maybe he tried to walk home and just wound up in the water.

My story ended really well, and she recognized me at an In 'N' Out a year later. At first I denied who I was but I realized she was trying to thank me. She told me she was lucky, that she knew that she could have run into a bad person and something very bad could have happened to her. It was a nice bookend.

I wish Henry's had such an ending and we weren't having to discuss this. It's very, very sad.

The voicemail sounds likely a digital distortion of someone screaming. I used to use police-style radios and they’d make that same distortion when the reception was bad. I’m guessing he damaged his phone in his drunken state. Also, that lake looks more like a swamp. The edges were covered in grass and bushes. It’s really hard to see where bodies of water like that are at night.

This is one of the strangest mysteries and it barely gets any coverage. The voicemail is terrifying sounds like the damn Predator. Good coverage.

So one thing about cellphone pings is that, when your phone pings the cell tower, it doesn’t actually ping your exact location. It pings at the tower. So often, there’s a pretty sizable radius that a person could actually be. Thank you lordanarts for teaching me that one

Honestly I think someone drowned him or he accidentally drowned himself, the voicemail does kind of sound like when you put your head under water and make noises

Like other people said , its most likely that "bubbling" noise in the voicemail was drowning. Also, when someone is stabbed/shot, or attacked, depending on where you've been injured, you tend to throw up and choke on blood , the voicemail sounds similar to that as well . However Hannah is saying there was no report of stab wounds , so could be drowning. Either way very tragic, condolences to the family.

It wasn't an animal. Someone at the end of the recording says "stop it." This indicates (to me) someone with a motive decided to kill Henry. They made a point to call his wife, knowing she would listen to the sound of him dying. That is vindictive and personal.

The phone call sounds exactly like a baby/small child crying to me. But that makes even less sense than all the theories you mentioned! Truly a mystifying case.
