  After the opening bombardment of February 21, the German advance guard of around 10,000 men actually encountered the few hundreds survivors of Colonel Driant&apos;s troop made up of the 56th and 59th battalion of foot hunters. Lieutenant Colonel Driant is well known in France because he was one of the few men who tried to warn the Allied headquarters of the imminent German attack near Verdun on several occasions. He and 1,120 men ( over 90% of his unit) were killed on February 21 and 22, delaying the German advance and buying precious hours for the defenders despite being heavily outnumbered and outgunned in a lunar battlefield.

  I can recommend visiting the Verdun area. The area around the great Forts of Douamont and de Vaux is pockmarked like a moon landscape, its very impressive. Taking a trip into the forts themselves left a deep impression on me. Sealed/caved in walls with a little sign here and there explaining how a shell came through the roof in this specific room housing an aid post, killing everyone inside and entombing them. And ofcourse the Douaumont Ossuary, housing the bones of tens of thousands unidentified soldiers, with the graves of countless others in front of it. Its truly a place of death.

  It&apos;s amazing that this is free. Genuinely reminds me of a documentary that would be played on the Military Channel back in the early 2010s.
