It's brutal according to "Westerners", yet China produces 1.3M+ engineers every year as opposed to 350k to the West and America combined.

I honestly don't think China is worrying about the fact that the system may be harsh. There are so many damn people in the country that for every person who gets stressed or becomes ill due to the pressure, there are many more who can handle the pressure and go on to succeed and bring the country up to levels of success that the west can only dream of.
Coming from someone who has visited China for 20 years and witnessed the meteoric rise whose accelerated pace never ceases to amaze me each time I visit.

From Singapore here. Our education system is increasingly more intense yet giving more time to the youngster nowadays. Thank God we dont have the night school system here.

It's the overall mentality.
In China and South Korea for example, doing well in school and getting excellent grades is often admired. Other kids may look up to you.
In the West, you might be called a nerd or even be bullied for it.😆😅

It should also be mentioned that those who didn't get high points and high degrees in China, still benefit from the progress and development that comes with a highly educated and/or hard-working society. The living standard of everyone, not just the highest achievers, has increased significantly. And there are still enough jobs and locations in China that can offer a more slow-paced, relaxed life without putting those who choose this lifestyle at risk of hunger, violence, or homelessness. In many Western countries, we don't have those options AND we get worse education.

The gaokao system is a very equitable social mobility enabler for the whole population.

Yes, this education system is applicable to East Asia in various forms not only in China. But it is more than exam but life long learning - Singapore.

The examine system was finalized in Song dynasty, ensuring an escape hatch for social mobility. the highest exam is held in the imperial palace in front of the emperor, if you rank top in village, city, province and finally national level, you are absorbed into the mandarin civil servant system. the Gaokao used to guarantee entry to top unis, but these days, even top uni graduates are not guaranteed good jobs... so lots people think the Gaokao is losing value

"Rather a well-made head than a well-filled one".
Chinese students are doing better than westerns mainly (but not only) because the west is teaching non-sense to their students.
