Maekar did not mean to kill his brother. He thought his son was about to be killed and he was swinging wildly to get to his kid. Dunk would have been fully within his rights to kill Aerion. Maekar did not know that Dunk would spare him. That Dunk showed mercy was one of the reasons Maekar offered him a place at Summerhall.

Egg isn't the Mad King, he's the Mad Kings grandad.

The brother that they mention is Maester Aemon at the Wall. When he is dying, he mentions to Sam that his younger brother was nicknamed Egg.

Baelor isn't doing it to go against his family, he's doing it because he thinks it's the right thing to do.

I so feel for Maekar. He truly loved his brother and never meant to kill him. And he knows that, although nobody will say it to his face, that he meant to do it or at least know people have questioned whether or not he did.
He morns his brother on an anniversary every year after.

Kristen’s reaction to Egg was me watching this whole show, he’s sweetest, cutest, baldest, most adorable little thing I’ve ever seen 🥹

Btw, Arlan was behaving that way throughout the flashback because his former squire—who was also his nephew—had just been killed at the Battle of the Redgrass Field

1:47:23 Egg yelling, "Get up, get up Ser" is now a lot of people's alarm ringtone 🤣

In the books the mad king (Aerys) is Egg's grandson. But in the show when Maester Aemon (Egg's brother) reveals to Jon Snow that he's a Targaryen, he refers to the mad king as Egg's son. The show removed a generation for simplicity.

Martin wrote three novellas about the hedge knight. He also provided the showrunners with several outlines of stories.
