Thanks Teos, a great video that arrived just in time. I've just started DMing with 'Lost Mine of Phandelver', and finished the first session at the beginning of the goblin ambush. You've given me lots of ideas to liven it up and make it more engaging.

Excellent ideas. A great way to expand on some of the deficiencies of the D&D Drops ambush.

I ran a bridge encounter where the group was attacked by griffons.
It's one of the encounters from Dragon Mountain where the players were warned that there would be agents from the mountain harassing them as they progressed towards their goal. Besides saying the griffons are exhibiting odd behavior by attacking the PCs instead of trying to steal their horses, the adventure doesn't have anything else to it like encounter map or anything, so I made up my own.
I had a couple of giant, broken statues coming up and out of the water near the bridge I thought my players would use as cover, or maybe climb them to get closer to the attackers.
But three of the five started flying, which - I don't know why I didn't think of it - surprised me.
I rolled with it. Instead of the griffons using dive bomb/run and gun tactics, they started to grapple the flyers and smashed them into the statues.
Now I had a reason for why these statues were all busted up.
We all had a blast. Except for the paladin who couldn't fly, didn't have a ranged weapon, and was too slow to get into a good position to do anything.
The next encounter was against a bunch of undead though. So he got to smite his little heart out.

Alright, breaking about my copy of Jungle Treks, the secret of the Grung's amulets is....
Oh, Hello Teos. I didn't see you pop up behind me. With the entire Dukes women's basketball team armed with baseball bats?!?!
IT'S AN AMBUSH!!!

What are your thoughts on letting players fully set up and execute ambushes in TTRPGs? How much advantage / edge should preparation and planning realistically provide?

Hey, I'm curious about your opinion on something very specific: for a while they took a lot of modules and characters from Greyhawk/Dragonlance and inserted it on Forgotten Realms. What are your thoughts about that?

What about creatures stalking the players? Or a semi-intelligent monster waiting for the perfect opportunity to isolate and drag someone away?
