Vapor barriers and vapor retarders are not the same thing, and that distinction shows up on the ARE constantly. Which barrier type gave you the most trouble when studying?
Full article and free study notes here: https://academy2.youngarchitect.com/vapor-barrier/

This is one of the most information packed episodes. It really is a detailed topic. My company does a lot of restaurants that have prototypical section and details. We don't usually check the climate requirements on the energy code but maybe we should start doing that after watching this. We don't do a whole lot in California or Florida so maybe the climate is mostly similar such as New Jersey, or New York.

I have been studying this topic since I bought my un-insulated Cape Cod Cottage 5 yrs ago. This is by far the best explanation of the topic I have seen. It's not even close. Asiri Designs does a great job as well but firehoses way too much information to get a clear understanding. This keeps it simple and leaves you with all the understanding you need.

Given that, I'm still unclear about the wall assembly for my cottage. I JUST put on new cedar shingles, Typar house wrap under that and old wall cladding containing large gaps between the boards act as the sheathing. That is the exterior assembly and I have all the correct flashing in place. Now it's time for the interior. From the inside I see large boards with large gaps covered only by the Typar on the outside and the cedar shingles.

From what I learned here am I correct in that one assembly that would work is to tape the gaps, then put in Rockwool bats, and then a smart vapor retarder over that and then sheetrock?

I had temporarily put in some fiberglass in one of the bathroom just to see how it worked but I failed to do any covering on the wall because at the time I didn't know anything. In the end the warm air inside condensed on the painted surface of the inside of the exterior cladding (Not all of it is painted) and then a TON of mold formed. This is obviously what I am trying to avoid.

Cape Cod is extremely moist from salt air and fog, winter arrives in Dec. and stays until March. 40 degrees and rainy is the norm in winter, and 70's to 80 july and august with high humidity.

Fantastic teacher you are. @17:20, i dont get the "cold climate" assembly. would you install the vapor barrier on top of wood framing studs, then install drywall on top of it?
