  The problem is that this isn&apos;t being taught before people enter the workforce. We&apos;re taught to be honest, work hard and our hard work/loyalty will pay off. We are not taught about how companies REALLY operate until it&apos;s too late. Bosses, HR and co-workers are NOT your friends. &nbsp;Employee handbooks are not contracts, and HR can basically do whatever they want as long as it is not illegal. They will cut corners, though! &nbsp; Everything you say is data and can be turned against you. The less you say, the better off you are. We learn the skills for getting the job, but we are not getting educated on how the system really works. Never assume that your employer has your best interests are at heart.

  Had a meeting one like that two years ago. I got put on PIP a year later but managed to pass it because it was bullshit. I actually reduced the amount of work I did to meet the bear minimum. Then got made redundant a month later, sued them and won a nice payout for discrimination and the HR lady got fired!

  You get a general gut feeling in the workplace that the 1 to 1s are not about actually caring about you, its about whether you pose a threat to the business.

  Sometimes your silence in those meetings is weaponized against you. In those situations, having nothing to say can be taken as an admission to being guilty of wrongdoing. And if you say something, you dig a hole for yourself -you can&apos;t win.
