This is actually a very risky strategy. Everyone is replaceable, no matter how untouchable they think they are.

Just being pleasant, reasonable, helpful, polite, reliable and capable puts you in more of a precarious position and likely to be elbowed out because your level of goodness just causes resentment among the naturally ruder work colleagues. High school shenanigans persist until retirement age.

There is a downside to being the untouchable employee, which is they cannot move from where they are. It would be difficult to get a better job or promoted. Being a high performer that can easily be replaced means you can get a different job with a higher pay.

Most jobs are toxic like adult High School! Nepotism, cronyism and favoritism carry far more weight than merit could ever aspire to. If promotions were done based on who is the most capable, best skilled, best educated, most qualified and actually best suited for the position, then the names on the company’s organizational chart would be 95% different!

Having spent 35 years in the corporate torture rack I can confirm much of this. 1) Legacy employees have long term customer relation and institutional knowledge 2) Mediocre employees do their job but are too expensive to replace 3) and sales reps bring in the money even if they’re total asswipes.

Ha, ha, ha. My manager is such an embedded employee. He told me: we won't get fired easily. This was a week before he announced himself sick due to stress. So now and then he shows up at work to drink a coffee. "Live by the sword, die by the sword"

Working in government agencies also sucks if you don't have backer. Some says to be that it's better to become a teacher.

I worked with three women who were considered to be untouchable because replacing them would create so much chaos for management. They were very difficult to work with as teammates, and everyone knew they were hard to work with. If you find yourself in that kind of situation, you need to leave and go somewhere else because you will never be given the same level of consideration they get. You will be expected to make all of the adjustments to be able to work with them. And doing so will wear you out. If you recognize that, cut your losses and move on.
